Mount Ayr Record News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa

OBITUARY ~ ALLEN "AL" STEPHENS

Allen STEPHENS, son of John and Catherine STEPHENS, was born November 3, 1883 near Benton, Iowa and passed away August 5, 1978 at the Ringgold County Hospital at the age of 94 years, nine months and two days.

On March 25, 1906 he was united in marriage to Lena Lee LINK and they were privileged to observe their golden wedding anniversary on March 25, 1956. To this union were born five children: Guelda (Mrs. George MOON), Blockton, Iowa; Gwenive (Mrs. Robert DINKEL), Logan, Iowa; Galene (Mrs. Alvin VARNER), Burlington, Iwa; W. A. STEPHENS, Diagonal, Iowa; and Gayland STEPHENS, who preceded his father in death.

With the exception of a few years lived in Taylor County, his entire life was spent in Ringgold County. He became a member of the Delphos Baptist Church in 1917 and transferred his membership to the Mount Ayr United Methodist Church June 12, 1960.

As a Heavy Equipment Contractor, Al was provided the opportunity to work in the out-of-doors, which he loved, and to conserve our nation's soil. One of his greatest and most enduring pleasures was the enjoyment of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

One of fourteen children, he is survived by three sisters: Ona KASTER, Des Moines; Lela HARVEY, Lincoln, Nebraska; and Gladys SELLERS, Mount Ayr, and three brothers, Ray, Des Moines and Marion and Jesse of Mount Ayr.

Left to mourn his departure are four of his children; two devoted and caring daughters-in-law, Mayme STEPHENS, Atlantic, Iowa, and Mary STEPHENS, Diagonal; three sons-in-law; 16 grandchildren; two great-grandsons and a host of other relatives and friends.

A poem of meaning to the family is:

"God knows the way; He holds the key
He guides us with unerring hand
SOmetimes the tearless eyes we'll see
Yes, there, up there, we'll understand."

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Lynn POTTER and Pastor Milt HENDERSON from Rhodes-Wilson Funeral Home in Mount Ayr at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 7, 1978. Burial was made at Mount Ayr in Rose Hill Cemetery.
