OBITUARY ~ ELMER ALEXANDER STARMER

Elmer A. STARMER was born December 25, 1911 at Washington Center, Missouri to Charley and Leona (SNEAD) STARMER.

On June 4, 1938 he was united in marriage to Verna Grace FINE. Elmer was a lifelong farmer who also drove a truck when he was younger. Elmer was an early riser and an active man. He loved to hunt deer, coyotes, pheasants and quail in Iowa and antelope in Wyoming. His favorite sport on TV was baseball with the Chicago Cubs being his favorite team and whoever beat the Atlanta Braves as his second favorite! A hot summer afternoon after a big dinner prepared by Verna was good reason to "beat the heat" and watch baseball on TV. He loved his family and enjoyed the family gatherings where he could visit with everyone.

After his retirement, he enjoyed going downtown in the morning and drinking coffee and swapping tales. He usually had a "comeback" line or some funny remark that would make you smile. His quick wit, always knowing where you stood with him, his gruff voice at times, and his smile and laughter will be missed by all. He belonged to the Ringgold Ramblers Camping Club.

Elmer passed away on June 20, 2003 at Clearview Home in Mount Ayr.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Verna on October 10, 1995; a grandson Chad STARMER; son-in-law Rich RICHARDSON; brothers, Everett, Elvis, Charles and Elden in infancy; and sisters, Estel ECKARD and Goldie STARMER in infancy.

Elmer will be remembered by his daughters, Marilyn BEAR and husband Gary of Diagonal, Iowa and Merill McCULLOUGH and husband Gary of Dawson Creek, British Columbia, Canada; a son Eldon STARMER and wife Linda of Creston, Iowa; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a brother Carl Dean STARMER and wife Virginia of West Des Moines, Iowa; a brother-in-law Wayne FINE and wife Jan of Plattesville, Wisconsin; sisters-in-law, Rose STARMER of Guernsey, Wyoming and Lennis ALLEN of Des Moines, Iowa; and nieces, nephews and friends.

Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 25, 2003 at Wilson-Watson & Armstrong Funeral Home in Mount Ayr, Iowa with Pastor David MARTINSON officiating. Musicans were Judy NEWTON and Shelley MASON.

Casketbearers were Matthew STARMER, Mick AUSTIN, Cody AUSTIN, Chris RICHARDSON, Nathan ALLEN, Wes COOPER and Jim FINE.

Elmer was laid to rest in the Diagonal Cemetery, Diagonal.
