OBITUARY ~ ELLA MAY SPENCER

Ella SPENCER, 92, of Ankeny, Iowa, formerly of Lenox, Iowa, died Thursday, October 2, 2008, at the Mill Pond Care Center in Ankeny. Services were Mondy, October 6, 2008, at Crest Baptist Church in Creston, Iowa. Pastor Chuch SPINDLER officiated. Powers Funeral Home of Creston took care of the arrangements. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Mount Ayr. Memorials are to the Easton Baptist Church in Des Moines, Iowa. Online condolences may be made under the obituary category at www.powersfh.com.

Ella May SPENCER, daughter of Carrie (CRAIG) and Ernest CARTER, was born August 7, 1916 in Princeton, Missouri. She was educated in Missouri. On June 30, 1934, she married Roy Lee COLE in Bethany, Missouri, and together they had five children. They lived in the Blue Ridge, Missouri and Cumming, Iowa area. Ella was primarily a homemaker and also worked as a cook, with Cumming schools and then a the Colfax nursing home. Ella and Roy later divorced.

On February 16, 1956, Ella married Ervin Ray SPENCER and her family increased by three step-children. They made their home in the Newton and Colfax area. She was a cook at the Colfax schools and Prairie City nursing home. In the mid 90's they moved to the Des Moines area. Ella was a member of the Southtown Baptist Church in Des Moines.

Survivors include her husband, Elvin SPENCER of Ankeny, Iowa; two sons, Chuck (wife Mavis) COLE of Jollye, Iowa and Bill (wife Sondra) COLE of Anton, Teas; four daughters, Donna (husband Cal) BROWN of Indianola, Iowa, Carrie Ann (husband John) HAYS of Radcliff, Kentucky, Joyce (husband Bill) FOSTER of Estrancia, New Mexicao, and Carla (husband Randy) RISCHER of El Dorado, Arkansas; two sons-inlaw, Robert ANTHONY of Des Moines, Iowa and Lewis McLEAD of Altoona, Iowa; 20 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two daughters, Ella Lee ANTHONY and Mary Lou McLEAD, and a grandson, Ray COLE.
