OBITUARY ~ ANDREW SOBOTKA
Andrew Joseph SOBOTKA, youngest son of Joseph and Mary KRECKY SOBOTKA, was born June 14, 1898, near Diagonal, Iowa,
on the family farm, Washington township, Ringgold county. That farm was to be his home until he passed away February 10,
1982 at Greater Community Hospital, Creston, Iowa, at the age of 83 years, seven months and 27 days.
Star Center school in the home community and grew up farming with his father and brothers.
He was united in marriage
with Eva DRISKELL on Feb. 14, 1923, with eight children born to them: Margaret, Maxine, Bernard, Joe, Wallace,
Charles, Elbert Lee and Sheryl.
He was a responsible member of his neighborhood and the community, a good neighbor,
a trusted freind, in addition to serving as township trustee, school director, on election boards, and taking
part in the social life of the area.
A longtime member of the Diagonal Methodist Church, he was faithful in attendance
and service, both in church offices, and as a ready volunteer when help of labor was needed.
In the SOBOTKA family he
is survived by one sister, Matilda JEZEK, Mount Ayr, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Frances (Mrs. Edward) SOBOTKA, Diagonal;
and a brother-in-law, Lewis SLAVIK, Mount Ayr; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters,
Albena RYCHONOVSKY, Anna RICKER and Mary SLAVIK, and two brothers, Fredrick and Edward. Two sisters, Zofia and Rose,
died in infancy.
In the immediate family, he is survivd by his wife, Eva, with whom he would have observed their 59th
wedding anniversary this month; three daughters and sons-in-law, Margaret and Darland McGINNIS, Tabor, Iowa, Maxine and
William MYERS, Missouri Valley, Iowa, Sheryl and Carroll STRANGE, Virginia Beach, Virginia; five sons and daughters-in-law,
Bernard and Marilyn, Joe and Bernadine, Charles and Cawren, all of Diagonal, Wallance and Patty of Benton, Elbert Lee and
Janis, McCallsburg, Iowa. His family also includes 28 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
The family grew up
inthe presence of good example, of love and concern, and over the years have been frequent visitors of their parents
and grandparents, with family gatherings joyous time. In that close-knit circle his presence and counsel will be sorely
Funeral services were held Saturday, Febuary 13, 1982, at the United Church of Diagonal with Rev. Mark KOENIG
officiating. Organist was Mrs. Harold TAYLOR and music was by Bob BECKER. Casketbearers were Jon SOBOTKA, Rick SOBOTKA,
Mark SOBOTKA, Steve SOBOTKA, Dennis SOBOTKA and Kenneth SOBOTKA. Interment was in Bohemian Cemetery, Diagonal, Iowa.
Wilson-Watson Funeral Home was in charge of the service.
