OBITUARY ~ JOSEPH R. SNETHEN
Joseph R. SNETHEN, son of John W. and Leoral (LAFOLLETTE) SNETHEN, was born in Harrison County, Missouri, on July 22, 1915.
He passed away on June 11, 1987, at the age of 71 years, 10 months and 20 days.
Joe was one of 11 children, two of
whom, along with his parents, preceded him in death. They were Gladys WILSON of Boise, Idaho and Theo SNETHEN of Palo,
Iowa. Also preceding him in death were two sons-in-law, Richard FLOWERS and John DARNELL.
As third oldest in his family,
Joe learned early in life to be a reliable, helpful family member - a trait that remained with him always.
In [April 29] 1934,
he was married to Beulah May HON, daughter of Lloyd and Rachel (JOHNSON) HON. They shared 53 years of married life
together. To this union four children were born. They are: Nadine DARNELL of Ridgeway, Missouri; Donald SNETHEN of
Eugene, Oregon; Deva McCOLLUM, of Eagleville, Missouri; and Richard SNETHEN of Redding, Iowa. Joe's greatest
joys in his later years were his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Joe was a hard-working, loving family man.
In their early married years, he engaged in farming. In the 1950's, he turned to carpentry and plied that
trade for the rest of his life. He lived all his life in Missouri and Iowa, part of the time in or near Des Moines, Iowa,
and for the past 20 years in Redding, iowa. Ill health caused early retirement, but he continued to do the small loving
things he could for his family and friends.
Joe is survived by his wife and children; by daughters-in-law, Cynthia
and Marjorie SNETHEN and son-in-law, Michael McCOLLUM; 15 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Also surviving
are four brothers: Carroll of Veneta, Oregon; James and Alvin, both of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and Harrold of Anchorage, Alaska;
and four sisters: Mary VAUGHN of Caldwell, Idaho; Verda McLAIN of Eagleville, Missouri; Lois McQUERRY of Ridgeway,
Missouri; and Doris ANDERSON of Seattle, Washington. Many nieces and nephews and other family members also survive, plus a
host of friends. he will be sadly missed by his and Beulah's large, closely-knit families. His passing will leave a gap
that can never be filled.
Funeral services were held June 14, 1987 from the United Methodist Church at Redding, Iowa,
conducted by Rev. Ed KAIL. Music was provided by Mr. and Mrs. Eldon BOESE.
Casketbearers were Glenn HARROLD, Wesley
