OBITUARY ~ IVA EDITH SMITH

Iva Edith, eldest daughter of Chris and Josephine (SPARKS) HIGHSHOE, was born July 24, 1888 in Illinois and departed this life March 5, 1987 at the age of 98 years and seven months.

The family moved to Washington County, Iowa, then to Missouri. When she was 18 years of age, the family settled on a farm in Riley Township.

On January 6, 1908, she was united in marriage with Herbert C. SMITH. Five children were born of this union, Harold L. Helen, Howard, Bert and Hazel.

They spent the first years of their marriage in St. Paul, Minnesota. In about 1926, the returned to Decatur and Ringgold counties where she lived for the remainder of her life. The family lived on farms until 1945 when they retired from the farm and moved into Mount Ayr.

After moving to town, she worked for Billie FINCH and then for various restaurants in town. She was proud of the compliments she received about the rolls that she baked each day.

A lifetime hobby was gardening and her flowers. A latter year hobby was the creating of beautiful quilts. She was an artist with her blending of colors to make her quilts. She did this entirely by hand, every stitch hand-sewn.

Her greatest joy was her families. The love she had for her mother and her brothers and sisters and their families was best enjoyed by the dinners that she served to them each year on her birthday. Then in later years her own children and grandchildren became her greatest pride andjoy.

She confessed Jesus as her Lord and Savior at an early age and was a member of the Methodist Church in Lamoni. She re-affiremd her faith in the Lord and was baptized and joined the Christian Church in Mount Ayr during the ministry of Reverend Larry SQUIER.

She was preceded in death by her husband; one daughter, Helen; two sons, Harold and Howard; her parents; two sisters and two brothers.

Left to mourn her death are a son, Bert, and wife, Georgia, of Albany, Oregon; daughter, Hazel FOLTZ, and husband, Claire, of Mount Ayr; 11 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren; one sister and two brothers, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held March 8, 1987 from the First Christian Church in Mount Ayr, Iowa, conducted by Rev. Doris KINTON. Music was provided by Mike GREENE, Mrs. Jim JONES and Mrs. Robert FISHER.
