Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
April, 1980

OBITUARY ~ FRANCIS E. SMITH

Francis E. SMITH was born May 3, 1919 on a farm in Liberty Township. He was the son of Donald C. and Beulah FENDER SMITH. he would have been 61 years old next month.

On Saturday, April 5, 1980, he died as the result of his tractor going off the road and upsetting on him. His wishes during his life was that he could die "with his boots on", and that his death would be a fast one. The Lord granted him both wishes. The shock of his sudden death has been a great one to his family, relatives and friends. His personal wish would be for all of us to pay our respects, and then return to our normal living again.

He enjoyed his home and friends in Ringgold county and had no desire to travel to very distant places. he thoroughly enjoyed the spring of the year when he could get into the field and work the soil. He firmly believed in the conservation of the soil.

He grew up in Tingley Township and received his high schoole education at Tingley High School.

On March 23, 1940 he was married to Mildred DeLAY, who survives him. They observed their 40th wedding anniversary about two weeks ago, and had a wonderful day with their family and friends. We feel it to be a wonderful blessing that this privilege was granted to him before his death.

They have one son, Jim who survives him along with his wife, Mary Ann, and their three children, Robert James, Sandra Kay and Debra Sue. Their granddad loved them dearly, and enjoyed watching them grow and develop into such fine children.

He will be remembered for his jovial attitude towards daily life, for his quick wit, and for his support to his friends in troubled times.

Serices were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 8, 1980 at the Tingley United Methodist church. Officiating ministers were Rev. Leslie CLAHOUN, Rev. Walter ZARR and Rev. Merlin WILKINS. Organist was Mrs. Roger MORRISON.

Casketbearers were Ivan GROUT, Donald WEEDA, Robert ENGLAND, Roger MORRISON, Frank REASONER and Doyle RICHARDS. Honorary casketbearers were Loren IBBOTSON, Russel PETERSOHN, Carl FORD, Carl RIGGS, Ralph SMITH, Harris HILL, Dean JOHNSON, Kenneth REED, Donald GROUT, Elton WERENER, Darrell WERNER, George MINNICK, Keith LININGER and Wayne OVERHOLZER. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery at Mount Ayr.
