November, 1975

OBITUARY ~ FOREST D. SMITH

Forest D. SMITH, son of George T. SMITH and Laura Belle BRINING SMITH, was born Dec. 26, 1891, at Macedonia, Iowa, and departed this life Oct. 28, 1975, in the Ringgold County Hospital, after a short illness, at the age of 83 years, 10 months and two days.

At an early age Forest moved with his family to Monroe township, where he spent the rest of his life. He was a farmer until he retired in 1945, at which time he and his family moved to Kellerton. He also was employed by Ringgold County for many years. In later years he worked at Kellerton Plumbing and Heating until his recent illness.

On Feb. 24, 1915, he was united in marriage with Verna D. ALLEN and together they celebrated their 50th anniverary of that marriage in 1965. To this union three daughters and one son were born, all of whom survive.

Forest united with the Methodist church in 1915 and was an active and dedicated member until his death. He was a member of the Eastern Star and a 50-year member of the Masonic lodge.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Verna, on Oct. 31, 1969. Also by his parents; sister, Jessie NORTHEY, and brother, Harold.

Left to mourn his passing are four children: Evelyn KILGORE of Marysville, Calif., Willette CURL of Centerville, Audra Lea COLLINGS of St. Joseph, Mo. and Robert Eugene of Des Moines. There are 16 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. He is also survived by his brother, Roland SMITH of Longmont, Colo., and other relatives and many friends.

Rest, beloved, rest
Lie down to slumber in the peaceful tomb,
Light from above has broken through the gloom;
Here in the place where once thy Savior lay,
Where He shall wake thee on a future day,
To be forever with thy God and Savior blest,
Rest, beloved, rest.

Funeral services were held Oct. 30, 1975, from the United Methodist church in Kellerton, with the Rev. Walter ZARR officiating. Organist Mrs. Weldon MEADOWS accompanied the vocalist, Mrs. Ronnie KASTER. The casketbearers were Chet MUNYON, Chet GIBSON, Leland DUFTY, Gilmore BARBOUR, LeRoy TRIMBLE and Interment was in the Maple Row cemetery, Kellerton.
