Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
January, 1985

OBITUARY ~ LEWIS SLAVIK

Lewis SLAVIK, son of Frank SLAVIK, Sr. and Katherine DVORAK SLAVIK, was born Dec. 1, 1886 in Chrast, Czechoslovakia, and died early Wednesday morning, Jan. 23, 1985 at the Clearview Nursing Home in Mount Ayr, Iowa, at the age of 98 years, one month and 22 days. He came to America in 1893 with his parents, three brothers and a sister, Anna. One brother, John, was born in Ringgold Co.

On Feb. 2, 1910 he was united in marriage to Mary SOBOTKA in Diagonal, Iowa. She died in 1977.

Uncle Lewis, as he was lovingly known by many, was a farmer until retiring. He became a resident at Clearview in Mount Ayr on Aug. 20, 1980. He enjoyed the out of doors and he enjoyed music, playing the violin and the accordian to the delight and entertainment of relatives and friends.

He lived to see and appreciate the many years of change and progress made in this area as well as the whole country. He was interviewed by Ina NAPIER at which time the interview of his recollections of his life span were recorded on tape

Lewis was a devoted, dedicated member of the United Methodist Church of Diagonal, being a faithful attendant as long as health permitted. His sincere concern was helping others. Lewis and Mary cared for his aging mother in their home, when she was ill, giving loving care until her death in 1928. They also took into their home a nephew, Leon SKROH, after he lost his parents in Colorado.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary; his parents; brothers, Frank, Jr., Joseph, Antone, and John and sister Anna, who with her husband, Fred SKROH, was murdered in Colorado in 1921. Lewis was the last of the SLAVIK family.

Survivors include four sisters-in-law, Frances and Eva SOBOTKA, and Anna SLAVIK and Matilda JEZEK, of Diagonal, Iowa; a host of nieces and nephews and many friends.

God sees when the footsteps falter,
When the pathway has grown too steep;
Then He touches the weary eyelids
And gives His dear ones sleep.

Services were held from the United Church of Diagonal on Friday, January 25, 1985. Officiating was Rev. Mark KOENIG. Music was provided by Mrs. Claire NEWTON, Mrs. RIchard TAYLOR and Mrs. Jack TAYLOR.

Casketbearers were Leo SOBOTKA, Ivan SOBOTKA, David SOBOTKA, Charles SOBOTKA, Wallace SOBOTKA and John RYCHNOVSKY. Burial was in the Bohemian cemetery at Diagonal.
