OBITUARY ~ MILDRED (ROBINSON) SHIELDS
April 03, 1919 ~ November 07, 2013

Mildred Robinson Shields, daughter of Glenn David and Mary Ellen (Wolfe) Robinson, was born April 3, 1919, in Mount Ayr, Iowa. She graduated from Kellerton high school and furthered her education at Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Missouri. Mildred taught for a short time in country schools. In 1939 she was united in marriage to Lyndell G. "Chubb" Shields and her passion and drive in life was to be the best wife and mother that she could; and she excelled at it.

Mildred always put her family needs before her own. She was a devoted daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She had a servant's heart and cared for people in their time of need. She was intelligent, attractive and generous and was best known for ensuring that the health and welfare of family and friends in need were her priority. Driven by Lyndell's profession and career, the family lived in 10 different cities throughout the state of Iowa during their 53 years of marriage.

Always a much-devoted volunteer and dedicated contributor of her church, the United Methodist Church, Mildred was also truly an outdoors person. From her early childhood, Mildred was competitively active with saddle horses which became the family's avocation for all of their years. Both Lyndell and Mildred were inducted as members of the Iowa Horsemen's Hall of Fame. Mildred and Lyndell served as directors of I.S.H.A. board and Mildred also served more than 20 years as secretary of the statewide association. Mildred and Lyndell moved to Creston in 1972 where she was active in the United Methodist Church and the U.M.W. Lyndell passed away in 1991.

Mildred moved to Des Moines in 2008 and she passed away there on November 7, 2013.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, and sister, Mary Marie Bronson.

Those left to cherish her memory include her five sons, Robert Lynn (Carol) Shields of Newburg, Indiana, William Lee Shields of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, James Crawford (Lanell) Shields of Estero, Florida, John David (Chris) Shields of Keokuk, Iowa, and Thomas Raymond (Yolanda) Shields of Des Moines, Iowa; 10 grandchildren, Randy, Mike, Scott, John, Sarah, Todd, Michael, Melissa, Matthew and Jessica; great-grandchildren, Hanah, Issay, Sam, Ryder, Violet, Lucy, Mary, Lana, Chrissy and Brandon; nieces; nephews; other relatives, and friends.

A memorial fund has been established for Down Syndrome Research and Treatment Foundation. Watson-Armstrong Funeral Home in Mount Ayr was in charge of the arrangements.

Services were conducted at the United Methodist Church in Creston, Iowa, on Tuesday, November 12, 2013 with Rev. Gideon Gallo and Rev. Tom Woodin officiating. Musicians were Beverly White and Laura Hartman.

Casket bearers included Robert Shields, William Shields, James Shields, John Shields, Thomas Shields and Ronald Shields.

The committal service and burial were by Rev. Edward Shields at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Mount Ayr.
