OBITUARY ~ RAYMOND WILLIAM SCHLAPIA

Raymond William SCHLAPIA was born on May 8, 1928, at Benton, Iowa to Austeen Lee and Bertha May (FERTIG) SCHLAPIA. Raymond, 73, died at his residence in Bartlett, Texas on Monday, April 22, 2002.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 25, 2002 at Goodnight Funeral Home with Reverend Dan ROBERTS officiating. Raymond was laid to rest in the Bartlett City Cemetery. Casket bearers were Kevin SCHLAPIA, Chris SCHLAPIA, Cory SCHLAPIA, Bobby BARTLETT, Brian WHITLOW and Jason FLOYD.

On August 25, 1951, he was united in marriage to Shirley PATTON. He retired from the Air Force in 1968, and had lived in Bartlett, Texas for 34 years. For 28 years, he was co-owner and operator of the V & S Gulf Station in Bartlett. This location was known as the friendliest corner in Bartlett. Raymond was a member of the Methodist Church and of the American Legion. He had been named Citizen of the Year by the Bartlett Area Chamber of Commerce.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife Shirley; a daughter, Karen MARKHAM and husband Rick of Wheeler, Texas; two sons, Ronald SCHLAPIA and wife Joy of Round Rock, Texas and Randall SCHLAPIA and wife Anne of Anchorage, Alaska; six grandsons; four great-grandchildren; three sisters, Delores WARDLOW of Salinas, California, Clara Belle FIELDS of Apple Valley, California and Elly SMITH of DeRidder, Louisiana; one brother David SCHLAPIA of Salinas, California; and nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Goodnight Funeral Home in Bartlett was in charge of the arrangements.
