OBITUARY - ANDREW EWING SYLVESTER
Andrew Ewing SYLVESTER, the son of Gorham and Mary (EWING) SYLVESTER, was born February 28, 1839 in Rutland, Meigs County,
Ohio, and died August 30, 1912 in Boyero, Lincoln County, Colorado.
He enlisted in the Union Army at Pomeroy, Ohio on December 11, 1861 and served as a
Sergeant in Company E of the 19th Infantry, First Battalion. He became missing in action at Chickamaugua, Georgia, September
30, 1863, and was captured by Confederate troops. He was held in prison camps at Richmond and Danville, Virginia, then
was sent to Andersonville Prison Camp in Sumter County, Georgia during 1864. While held at Andersonville, he fell prey to
scurvy, a condition that led to his lifelong disability. He was discharged from the Union Army on
December 11, l864, and returned to Danville, Ohio. The following spring he moved to Allendale, Worth County, Missouri, where
he was married to Eliza Ellen BUTLER, the daughter of Abraham H. and Eunice G. (MOSBARGER) BUTLER, on August 31, 1865, by
W. L. NEAL, J.P. The young couple went to Stringtown, Iowa in 1869. They moved to Lotts Creek Township, Ringgold County,
Iowa, in 1880. Around 1908 they moved to Boyero in Lincoln County, Colorado, where
Andrew died of nephritis on August 30, 1912. He was buried at Evergreen Cemetery, Hugo, Cororado, August 31, 1912.
NOTE: Eliza Ellen (BUTLER) SYLVESTER was born on May 30, 1848, Gallia County, Ohio, and came to
Worth County, Missouri with her parents between the years of 1854 and 1857. She died on November 15, 1932, near
Boyera, Colorado, and was interred at Evergreen Cemetery, Hugo, Colorado.
