ATHENA ROSE (KINDER) STRANGE

Athena Rose STRANGE, daughter of Leonard Leroy and Bessie Athena (NEWMAN) KINDER was born March 18, 1928 at Mount Ayr, Iowa. She departed this life on November 27, 2007 while a resident in the Osceola Nursing & Rehab Center in Osceola, Iowa.

She grew up in the Mount Ayr community graduating from the Mount Ayr High School with the class of 1945. She graduated from A.I.B. in Des Moines and furthered her learning with many different schools for various jobs she had around Mount Ayr.

On June 28, 1947 Athena married Elbert STRANGE in Mount Ayr, they lived in Diagonal and California for a few years before moving to Mount Ayr when Elbert was elected sheriff of Ringgold County. During the years here she was active in the First Christian Church, the Eastern Star, Ringgold Singers, the American Legion Auxiliary, bowling leagues, and joined Elbert with many of his sheriff association meetings. She also stayed active with work around Mount Ayr, working for Dr. MITCHELL in his clinic, at the Ringgold County Hospital and ended up with her own gift shop "Athena’s House". They also spent winters in Texas after retirement where she enjoyed meeting Mount Ayr folks and making new friends, along with the activities of their court of which swimming was her favorite.

Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, brother Harry and sister Kathlene.

Left to mourn her passing are her son Douglas and his wife Dixie STRANGE; daughter Cindy CARPENTER; 9 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild; brother Everett KINDER and sister Bonnie DUNCAN; along with many nieces, nephews and friends.

Services were held Saturday, December 1, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. from First Christian Church of Mount Ayr, Iowa.
