OBITUARY

One by one the grim reaper of death gathers in the old settlers. As much as we would like to have them remain with us, they fall and disappear under the mighty blade of the harvester. Which swings in ever widening circles as time goes on. It is with regret that we chronicle the passing of each and every one of them. For they are as land marks to us, as time is no respecter of matter and humanity, and finally the endless grind make those totter and fall. So it is with our beloved sister, Nancy Jane STEVENS.

Nancy Jane SIMPSON was born in Huntingdon county, Penn, on March 28, 1851, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. A. M. JONES, April 11, 1927, at the age of 76 years, and 13 days. In 1856 she moved with her parents from Huntingdon county, Penn. to Mercer county, Illinois. (Alexis or Norwood). There on Jan. 2, 1871, she was married to Ralph Edward STEVENS. To this union were born 9 children, 3 boys and 6 girls. In the fall of 1876 they moved to their homestead farm 1 1/2 miles SW of Diagonal, Iowa, where they lived till the death of her husband in 1911, then her sons built her a new home in Diagonal and she moved into town. She kept up her home until her death. On Mar. 13, 1927 while at her daughter she fell and fractured her hip. Complications from this caused her death on Mon., April 11, 1927 at 12 o'clock noon.

Interment at Bethel Cemetery, Ringgold County, Iowa.

NOTE: Nancy's father was Alexander Moore SIMPSON, born 1807,Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, died in Mercer County, Illinois. He married Nancy's mother Margaret CUNNINGHAM, born 1810, Pennsylvania, and died in Mercer County, Illinois. Nancy's paternal grandparents were Robert Patterson SIMPSON, bon 1773, Ireland; died 01 Sep 1847, Hungtindon County, Pennsylvania, and Robert's first wife, Nancy MOORE, born April 3rd, 1798, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, and died August 22, August 1814, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania. Robert Patterson SIMPSON married second Sarah JACKSON in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, on August 22, 1822.
