FORMER WINTERSET SCHOOL TEACHER PASSES AT 46 YEARS

Hugh Hartley STEELE, superintendent of schools at Mt. Ayr, and a former Winterset school teacher, died Tuesday, September 6, at a hospital in Rochester, Minnesota. He had been stricken by a rare disease of the blood stream and had been critically ill for about a week. Mr. Steele was 46 years of age.

He taught in the Winterset schools from 1928 to 1942, as principal at the South Ward school. During his residence here he was active in community affairs, and was a member of the Winterset Rotary Club. He was a graduate of Iowa State Teachers' College at Cedar Falls, and held an M.A. degree from Drake University in Des Moines.

He is survived by his wife, the Gladys CLARK of Winterset; their son Dan; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. B. STEELE of Mr. Ayr; and four sisters, one of whom is Mrs. Lloyd KING of Winterset.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. this Friday from the Mt. Ayr high school auditorium. The body will lie in state in the high school auditorium this Thursday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 12 noon.

HUGH STEELE RITES HELD LAST FRIDAY

Mt. Ayr Superintendent Had Spent Quarter Century In Education

Funeral services for Hugh Hartley STEELE were held last Friday from the auditorium of the Mt. Ayr high school where he had been superintendent of schools since 1943.

The services were in charge of the Reverend Frank MOORE, of the Mt. Ayr Methodist church, assisted by the Reverend Mr. REEL, pastor of the Mt. Ayr Christian church. The obituary was read by Henry MILLER of Winterset. Burial was made in the Mt. Ayr [Rose Hill] cemetery.

Mr. STEELE had been in the educational field for a quarter of a century. He started teaching from 1923 to 1925 in the rural schools of Taylor and Ringgold counties. He then joined the Mt. Ayr faculty as an instructor in the junior high school for three years. He left there to come to Winterset as principal of the junior high school in which position he served for 14 years. He returned to Mt. Ayr in 1942 as high school principal and was elected to the superintendency of the Mt. Ayr schools in 1943.

He joined the Church of Christ in Winterset during the pastorate of the Reverend H.L. OLMSTEAD. He later transferred to the Christian church at Mt. Ayr. He was a member of the Masonic lodge and Order of Eastern Star. During his residence in Winterset he was an active Rotarian.

He received his B.A. degree from Iowa State Teachers' college at Cedar Falls and in 1944 obtained his M.S. degree in education from Drake university in Des Moines. At that time he was elected to Kappa Delta Pi, honorary educational fraternity at Drake.

A large number of Winterset people drove to Mt. Ayr last week to attend the final rites for Hugh STEELE. These included the following relatives and friends: Mr. and Mrs. Will C. JOHNSON and son Clarence, Mr. and Mrs. Dwight JOHNSON, Mr. and Mrs. Mont JOHNSON, Mr. and Mrs. Donal LILLARD, Mr. and Mrs. Henry MILLER, Dr. and Mrs. H. F. ILGENFRITZ and son Dick, Mr. and Mrs. F. P. HARTSOOK, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Van WARDEN, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph MILLS, Mr. and Mrs. Ray MILLS, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd T. KING, Mr. and Mrs. Charles MILLS, Mrs. Clifford MILLER, Mr. and Mrs. Peter CUNNINGHAM, Mr. and Mrs. Walter VANCE, Mr. and Mrs. Cloyd LAMB, Mr. and Mrs. R. C. DUNN, Leslie JACKSON, Eph MANNING, Mesdames Vernon CLARK, Earle NULL, Robert Lemon, C. O. KOEHN, Wendel NELSON, Harrison MARTIN, George JACKSON, Sam LATHRUM, Chester ROGERS, Rolland WELCH and Rex MARTIN. Mrs. Jessie CLARK and son Harold drove to Mt. Ayr from Lincoln, Nebraska and Carl CLARK, who now resides in Keen, Texas, came here and accompanied relatives to Mt. Ayr.

Hugh Hartley STEELE died at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester on September 6, 1949 of uremia related to malignant hypertension, age 36. He was born May 1, 1903 in Maloy, Iowa and died at 46 years, 4 months and 5 days. He was the son of Raymer Bround STEELE born in Pennsylvania and Emmaline GIRARD, born in Mapleton, Pennsylvania. Informant was Mayo Clinic records. He was buried in Mt. Ayr, Iowa and the undertaker was F.J. Paine Company of Rochester.
