The Ringgold Record, 1894
DEATH of MRS. M. STAHL.
Mrs. Mary STAHL, the wife of M. STAHL, living near Diagonal in Grant township, died on Monday, August 20, 1894, after a long
sickness. She was aged fifty-nine years, two months and seventeen days. Mrs. STAHL's maiden name was TALLEY, and she was born
in the state of Delaware, October 3, 1834. In the year 1842, she moved to Perry county, Ohio, and thence to Hamilton county,
Indiana, in the year 1850. She was married to Michael STAHL, November 10, 1854. They moved to Ringgold county, Iowa, in June,
1856, where they have since lived. Mrs. STAHL was a remarkable woman, and remarkable first as a wife. In all the trials, toils,
and troubles of life, she proved an able and admirable helpmeet (sic). In faith and hope, she was courageous, in counsel, she was
wise and sympathetic, in labors she was instant and industrious. The heart of her husband safely trusted in her, knowing that she
would do her part well. She made her home a model home and because she reigned through love, in the hearts of her husband and
She was remarkable as a mother and faithfully trained her children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord, and
during all the years they have risen up and called her blessed. For them she labored, sacrificed and prayed. Their nobility and
usefulness was after the glory of God, the chief thought of her heart. The writer has been in the STAHL home, and
instinctively concluded that Mrs. STAHL did her husband and children good and not evil all the days of her life. She was
a member of the M. E. church from early youth, and became a charter member of the old Bethel class organized by Jesse
SHERWOOD in 1856. She loved the house of God and the people of God. She leaves a husband, two sons and six daughters to
mourn her loss. One daughter is a missionary in a foreign land.
Mrs. STAHL has filled a large place in the home, the
church, and the hearts of friends; and her death will leave a large empty place which nothing but love to Christ can fill.
The funeral took place from the M. E. church at Diagonal, August 22, 1894, at 11 a. m., the services being conducted by
her pastor, Rev. CARPENTER, assisted by Rev. C. L. NYE of the Mt. Ayr M. E. church.
