OBITUARY - SAMUEL EVAN SMITH

Samuel Evan SMITH, son of Nellie McILHATTON and Samuel SMITH was born July 12, 1915 near Montezuma, Iowa. He attended country school until the sixth grade and graduated from Maple Hill High School in 1933. On August 11, 1951 Evan was united in marriage with Eleanor Maxine JOHNSTON [(1915-2001)] in her parents' home near Ellston, Iowa. Evan farmed in the Curlew area until his retirement in 1980. The couple have lived in their present home since 1985.

Survivors include his wife Eleanor of Emmetsburg, four children, Linda BIERMANN of Byron, Ill, Glen and Vernon of Curlew and Gwen of Kirkman, IA, eight grandchildren, three brothers, Cecil of Emmetsburg, Raymond of Curlew, and Nile of Clarkston, MI., and one sister Dora Ethel DUNCAN of San Jose, CA.

Evan was a member of the United Methodist Church in Curlew until its closure and presently is a member of the United Methodist Church in Mallard. He was a former 4-H leader and enjoyed fishing and hunting. Upon his retirement he wrote four books containing family history along with several short stories.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
