OBITUARY - REX A. SIMPSON

Rex A. SIMPSON was born on July 29, 1913, to Clifton and Ethel HIGGINS SIMPSON on the family farm near Shannon City, Iowa, and passed away at the Ringgold County Hospital on October 7, 1989. He was 76 years, two months, and eight days old.

He began farming in his early teens and took over the family farm in his early twenties. He was an active member of the Shannon City Methodist Church.

He was united in marriage to Helen MICKEL on February 12, 1939, at her parents' home near Afton. To this union were born four children: Ronald and Michael, both of Shannon City, Carol OLIVER of Melcher-Dallas and Mary Lou CHEERS of Afton.

Rex was best known in southern Iowa as a fine dairy farmer; he is also remembered by many as their 4-H leader, by others as a school board member and board president, by still others as a leader in many ag-related organizations. In 1968 he left active farming to become involved in agricultural sales work, a job particularly suited to him since he was able to call on and share his experience with other farmers, and as a result he also was able to continue learning about farming and meet new people.

For the past several years he has suffered from declining health and lived several months at the Health Care Center in Mt. Ayr.

He is survived by his wife, Helen; son Ronnie, wife Karen and their two children, Kim CORNING and Deb THEMMEL; son Mike, wife Beverly and their two children, Jane and Jim; daughter Carol OLIVER, husband Jerry and their two children, John and Joe; daughter Mary Lou CHEERS, husband Ron and their four children Sarah, Brenda, Ronda and Callista; one great-granddaugher Jenny CORNING; a sister-in-law, Helen MICKEL DAVIS of Creston; one nephew Carl SIMPSON of Des Moines; four nieces Marilyn GLADFELDER of Ankeny, Judy KNUTSON of Minneapolis, Ona LENTZ of St. Paul, and Barbara NICHOLS of Rochester, Minnesota; several cousins and other relatives plus a host of friends and neighbors.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Clarke.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, October 10, 1989, at the Wilson-Watson Funeral Home in Mt. Ayr with the Revs. Eydie STEPHENS and Merlin WILKINS officiating. Burial was in the Oakland Cemetery, Shannon City.

Memorials were directed to the Shannon City United Methodist Church.
