WELL-KNOWN FARMER HAS PASSED AWAY

JACOB SHAWLER OF LENOX TOWNSHIP
DIED AFTER LONG ILLNESS.

Jacob SHAWLER, for many years one of the best known and highly respected residents of lenox township died last evening [January 23, 1911] at the family residence near Phelps [Warrne County, Illinois] after a long illness, death finally resulting from gangrene. In the death of Mr. SHAWLER the county loses one of its early settlers while the community which was his home for so long, loses one of its most influential citizens. During his life here Mr. SHAWLER has been actively engaged in farming and has acquired large interests through his steady aggressive methods of tilling the soil.

Jacob SHAWLER was born in Edmonson county, Kentucky, Dec. 16, 1823 and lived there until 1849 when he came to this state with the family of Elder John RAY and took up his residence in Floyd township where he remained three years, after which he sold his interests there and moved to the present home in Lenox township. On Mrch 31, 1853, he was joined in marriage to Julia RAY, who with four sons survives him. Five children were born to Mr. and Mrs. SHAWLER, one son dying in 1909. Those living are Thomson of Phelps: A. H. of Ness county, Kan.; Philemon of Youngstown; and Jesse of Phelps.

In 1851 Mr. SHAWLER joined the Baptist church and was an active member of that denomination all the remainder of his life. The funeral will be held Thursday morning at 10 o'clock from the family residence and burial will be made in the Union cemetery south of Phelps.
