CLARA SHAWLER of CLEARFIELD DIES

CLEARFIELD - Clara May SHAWLER, 89, of Afton but a long-time resident of the Clearfield area before moving to Afton, died Wednesday at Greater Community hospital in Creston.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Methodist church in Clearfield with Rev. Herbert PHILLIPS officiating and burial in the Clearfield cemetery. The body is at the Varner-Crew funeral home in Clearfield.

Surviving are five sons, Glen and Gale of Denver, Colo., Burl of Des Moines, Birt of Lenox and Don of Kent; one daughter, Mrs. Reva RIPPERGER of Afton, 15 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Eva GIMSLEY of Blackwell, Okla.

OBITUARY ~ CLARA MAY (PORTER) SHAWLER

Clara May Porter Shawler, daughter of William and Annie Gensimore Porter, was born June 10, 1874 in Warren County, Illinois and passed away Feb. 12, 1964 at the Greater Community Hospital in Creston, at the age of 89 years, 8 months and 2 days.

At an early age she came with the family to Iowa and settled in the vicinity of the Four County Corner north of Clearfield.

On January 8, 1901 she was united in marriage to Milton W. Shawler. To this union were born six children: Glenn and Gail of Denver, Colo.; Beryl of Des Moines; Bert of Lenox; Reva (Mrs. Raymond) Ripperger of Afton and Donald of Kent.

They farmed around Clearfield with the exception of a short time in Oklahoma until 1940 when they retired and moved into Clearfield. For the past four years.

she had lived at the Boyd Nursing Home in Afton.

She was preceded in death by her husband on November 8, 1957. Those surviving are the five sons and one daughter, 16 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, one sister, Mrs Eva Grimsley of Blackwell, Okla., one brother-in-law, Lowell Shawler of Clearfield, two sisters-in-law, Minnie Woods of Clearfield, Sallie Shawler of Lenox, other relatives and many friends.

She was a member of the Methodist Church and of Greenwood Ladies.

Services were held at the Clearfield Methodist Church Saturday Feb. 15 with Rev. Herbert Phillips officiating. Burial was in the Clearfield Cemetery.
