OBITUARY - MRS. DAY SHAFER

Vergie C. SHAFER, daughter of George W. and Mary WILLIAMS ADAIR, was born May 23, 1897, at Redding, Iowa, and passed away May 26, 1973, in the Clarinda Municipal Hospital, at the age of 76 years and three days.

On November 20, 1915, she was united in marriage with Day SHAFER of Redding, and they were privileged to spend almost 58 years together in the Mount Ayr and Clarinda communities. This union was blessed with one daughter, Vada.

A loving wife, mother and grandmother, her greatest pride was her family and grandchildren, whom she so dearly loved.

She was an active member and worker in the Trinity United Presbyterian Church and a past president of the Women's Association. She was a Past Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, Past Worthy High Priestess of the White Shrine, past president of the Social Order of Beauceant and past president of the Past Matrons Club.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one grandson, a sister and two brothers.

Those who remain to cherish her memory are her husband, Day; daughter and son-in-law, Vada and John DENHART of Mount Ayr; two grandchildren, Sybil and Billie KELLEY of Brooklyn; two great-grandsons, Kurtis and Karlin KELLEY; several nices and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held May 30, from the Trinity Presbyterian Church, with Dr. J. D. ALMES officiating. Music was provided by Mrs. Betty BLACK and Cecil SMITH, vocalists, and Mrs. Helen HOSKINSON, organist. Casketbearers were Raymond JOHNSTON, F. E. McNEILEY, Hugh LOUDEN, Ralph WILLIAMS, Charles IDDING and Robert HAMM. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery at Mount Ayr, where graveside services were held at three o'clock.

Transciption by Sharon R. Becker, July of 2011
