OBITUARY - JOHN WILLIAM SHAFER
John William SHAFER was born September 15, 1919 to John W. and Grace FERGUSON SHAFER on a farm near Redding, Iowa. He lost
his earthly battle but won the war on October 22, 2000 at the Mount Ayr Health Care Center at the age of 81 years, one
month and seven days.
He was a life long member of the United Methodist Churches in Middle Fork and Redding where he served on many of their
boards, committees and other capacities.
He attended the Redding Consolidated school and graduated in 1938. He was drafted into the United States Army in May, 1941
and served with the Army Corps of Engineers in the continental 48 states, the Alaska Highway in Canada, and in the
topographic mapping department in Australia and the Philippine Islands of the Pacific Theater during World War II and was
discharged on October 17, 1945.
John was united in marriage to Naomi Ruth SEARLES of Blockton, Iowa on January 12, 1943 at Grant City, Missouri. To this
union were born two sons, John William "Bill" and Robert "Bob."
After discharge from the Army he returned to the farm, where he farmed until 1960, when he entered the insurance business.
He was secretary/manager of Ringgold Mutual until 1970 when he and Naomi started Shafer Insurance Agency. He retired in
1982 to spend time on the farm, traveling, attending his Army reunions and visiting relatives.
He served on the Redding school board during the consolidation with the Mount Ayr district. He was a 21-year member of the
Rideta Electric Cooperative board. He was a member of the Ringgold Mutual Insurance board and a former member of the Mount
Ayr Lions Club, and the Mount Ayr Community Improvement Club.
His hobbies were spending time with his family and grandchildren, writing letters, family genealogy and keeping up their
123-year-old Century Family Farm.
Left to mourn his passing is his wife, Naomi; sons, Bill (wife Jean) and Bob (wife Sheila), grandchildren: Sara (husband
David) Daniel, Michael SHAFER, David (wife Nona) SHAFER, Amy SHAFER, Mary SHAFER; and great-grandchildren Alex and Natalie
Daniel; a step-sister Genevee MATHEWS; three sisters-in-law, numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents John and Grace; step-father Harve MAUDLIN; brothers, Wilbur and Cecil SHAFER, and
step-brothers, Kenneth and Roland MAUDLIN.
Services were held Wednesday, October 25, 2000 at the United Methodist Church, Redding with Reverend Michael DRUHL
officiating. Musicians were June SMITH and Dr. Collus LAWHEAD. Casket bearers were Michael SHAFER, David SHAFER, Doyle
SHAFER, David DANIEL, Cecil V. SHAFER and Larry MAUDLIN. Honorary pallbearers were Mike LYNCH, Dale WALKUP, Bob ERICKSON,
Harold W. COMBS, Gary LAMBERT, Tom KELLY and Reverend Weldon WHITNACK.
John was laid to rest in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr.
