He was a life long member of the United Methodist Churches in Middle Fork and Redding where he served on many of their boards, committees and other capacities.

He attended the Redding Consolidated school and graduated in 1938. He was drafted into the United States Army in May, 1941 and served with the Army Corps of Engineers in the continental 48 states, the Alaska Highway in Canada, and in the topographic mapping department in Australia and the Philippine Islands of the Pacific Theater during World War II and was discharged on October 17, 1945.

John was united in marriage to Naomi Ruth SEARLES of Blockton, Iowa on January 12, 1943 at Grant City, Missouri. To this union were born two sons, John William "Bill" and Robert "Bob."

After discharge from the Army he returned to the farm, where he farmed until 1960, when he entered the insurance business. He was secretary/manager of Ringgold Mutual until 1970 when he and Naomi started Shafer Insurance Agency. He retired in 1982 to spend time on the farm, traveling, attending his Army reunions and visiting relatives.

He served on the Redding school board during the consolidation with the Mount Ayr district. He was a 21-year member of the Rideta Electric Cooperative board. He was a member of the Ringgold Mutual Insurance board and a former member of the Mount Ayr Lions Club, and the Mount Ayr Community Improvement Club.
