OBITUARY ~ HAZEL JANE (CROSS) SCHLAPIA

Hazel Jane SCHLAPIA was born November 29, 1910 at Benton, Iowa and passed away November 27, 1986, at the age of 75 years, two days before her seventy-sixth birthday, at the Ringgold County Hospital in Mount Ayr, Iowa. She was one of four children of Walter A. and Etta Mae HALL CROSS. In 1928 Hazel was graduated from Benton High School where she was a star basketball forward and skilled in declamatory.

On April 11, 1933, Hazel married Leroy SCHLAPIA. To this union a son, Larry Lee, was born.

Hazel lived all of her life in Ringgold County, fifty-three years of it with her husband, leroy. They had lived in and near the communities of Benton, Delphos and Diagonal.

She spent all of her life serving the public of Ringgold County, beginning in the store in Benton, then cooking for a construction crew in the Caledonia area, the sale barn and cafe in Diagonal, and since 1967, with WARIN'S Shamrock Cafe [Mount Ayr]. The team of Leroy and Hazel touched many lives. Hazel was a member of the United Church of Diagonal.

Her parents preceded her in death.

Left to mourn her passing are her husband, Leroy; son Larry and his wife, Mary Lee, of Creston; grandsons, Carlon of Ankeny and Aaron of Creston; brothers, Walter Ivan of Lenox, Ames Russel and his wife Elberta of Mount Ayr, and Samuel Eugene and his wife Martha of Kansas City; many nieces and nephews and other relatives and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held November 29, 1986, from the Diagonal High School Gymnasium at Diagonal, Iowa, conducted by Rev. Eydie DEAL. Music was proved by Mrs. Harold TAYLOR, Mrs. Phillip DUKES and Mrs. Chuck GIFFORD, and taped vocal selections by Grandson Carlon SCHLAPIA.

Casketbearers were Ron CROSS, Mac CROSS, Sam CROSS, Alvin CROSS, David JESSEN, Pat SCHLAPIA, Marion PRICE and Ronald SCHLAPIA. Honorary pallbearers were all co-workers, past and present, at WARIN'S Shamrock Cafe. Burial was in the Diagonal Cemetery at Diagonal, Iowa.
