OBITUARY ~ HARRY M. SCHLAPIA

Harry M. SCHLAPIA, 60, 1106 Lake St., Creston, Iowa, died Wednesday morning, Dec. 28, 1988, of respiratory failure at Greater Community Hospital.

Services were held December 31, 1988, at Holy Spirit Parish. The Revs. Gerald STESSMAN and Michael BERNER officiated, with burial in the Calvary Cemetery. A parish rosary was held at 3 p.m. Friday, Dec. 30, at the Coen-Beaty Funeral Home with a Christian wake service at 7 p.m.

Mr. SCHLAPIA was born August 5, 1928, in Benton to Owen Lee and Madge Ruth (BEEN) SCHLAPIA. He married Patty HARVEY July 14, 1951, in Creston. He attended Creston Junior College and was a Creston resident for over 35 years. He was owner/partner of the Creston Motor Company since Feb. 28, 1958.

He was a former board member of Greater Community Hospital, St. Malachy School and Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of Holy Spirit Parish, Parish Council, BPOE No. 605, VFW Post No. 1797, Williams American Legion, Iowa Auto Dealers Association Board of Directors and director of Iowa State Savings Bank. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving with the Seabees.

Survivors include his wife, Patty, of Creston; four daughters, Christine (Mrs. Bob) BURLINGAME of Des Moines, Mary Lynn (Mrs. Jim) BAKER of Creston, Dorothy (Mrs. Dan) DAVENPORT of Ames, and Susan SCHLAPIA at home; three sons, Michael (wife Tammie) of Des Moines, Patrick of Underwood and John SCHLAPIA at home; seven grandchildren; a brother, LeRoy SCHLAPIA of Diagonal, and three sisters, Ruth PAGE of Mount Ayr, Wanda LORENZ of Des Moines and Marjorie JESSEN of Creston.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Hugh and Francis.
