OBITUARY ~ DUANE CLAIR RICHEY

Duane Clair RICHEY, son of Clair and Ruby COX RICHEY, was born February 24, 1925 at their home in Mount Ayr, Iowa, and passed away June 17, 2002 in Middleburg, Florida.

Duane attended elementary and high school in Mount Ayr and graduated in the class of 1942. That same year he joined the Navy and was assigned to the USS Bennington defending his country until the end of World War II. Duane returned home to Mount Ayr for a brief time following the war. Having lot his mother and father and best pal, his dog Brownie, while at war, there was no home to return to. He moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma near his sister, where he attending college.

On February 24, 1949 Duane and Clair Marie WILSON of Tulsa were married. They were blessed with two children, a daughter Terrisa Sue and a son Steven Duane. Several years later Duane and Clair parted.

In February 1962, Duane and Phyllis Mae WHITE, a widow with three small children, were married. Duane adopted her children, Dale, Rickie and Denise, raising them as his own.

Duane was employed by the United States Post Office in Tulsa as a mailman and in 1963 was transferred from Tulsa to Colorado where he served as postmaster of the Littleton, Colorado Post Office until retiring and moving to Alamagorda, New Mexico. This was their home until January of this year, 2002, when due to failing health Duane and Phyllis moved to be near their son Dale in Middleburg.

Duane had many fond memories of his youth in Mount Ayr. He was active in both school and church as well as making many good and dear friends as a Des Moines Register and Tribune newspaper boy and a sales clerk at the Irving Clothing Store. One of his favorite pastimes was being an amateur sport announcer of the many baseball games played in his backyard. Neighborhood boys and girls of all ages gathered to choose up sides for a good game of ball.

Preceding Duane in death were his parents, Clair and Ruby RICHEY; and three sisters, Thelma TURNER, Cleta VALE and Doris COVERDELL.

Those remaining to cherish his memory are his wife Phyllis of Middleburg; daughters, Terrisa RICHEY STONER of Tahlequah, Oklahoma and Denise RICHEY BARNES and husband Jerry of Englewood, Colorado; sons Steven RICHEY and wife Patricia of Front Royal, Virginia, Dale RICHEY and wife Maxine of Middleburg and Rickie RICKEY and wife Patricia of Naperville, Illinois; ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Audrey HAGUE of Shalimar, Florida and Velda FENTON of Osceola, Iowa.

Private family services were held in Middleburg.
