Lenox Time Table
Lenox, Iowa
Thursday February 6, 1975

OBITUARY ~ DOUGLAS A. RICE

Douglas A, Rice, son of Hardin D, and Alice Van Voosh Rice was born in Oliveh, So. Dakota on June 25, 1888, and passed away at the Lenox Care Center on Jan. 28, 1975 at the age of 86 years, 7 months and 3 days.

After the death of his wife in April of 1963, he maintained his own home in Lenox until March 18, 1974 when he entered the Care Center.

In April of 1916, he was married to Minnie Minnick. Six children were born to this union, all of whom survive. They are Opal (Mrs W A Goodale) of Diagonal, Lewis of Lenox, Paul of Corvallis, Oregon, Charlotte (Mrs. Dwight Cunning) of Mt Ayr, Betty, (Mrs. Max Brooks) of Chicago and Jorene (Mrs. Charles Rankin) of Omaha. He is also survived by four grandchildren 11 great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, several cousins, one sister, Mrs. Pearl Schroetar of Exira, Iowa. He was preceded in death by one sister, Mrs. Mae Schroeter and 2 brothers, Lawrence and Fred.

As a farmer in the areas of Ellston, Mt. Ayr, Diagonal, Clearfield, Maloy, Gravity, Lenox and Conway he pursued the only occupation dear to him. He loved grooming his horses and found it difficult to give them up to keep pace with our faster age.

He was first to volunteer his services when there was neighborhood illnesses and rigidly firm about paying his respects when there was a death. He enjoyed his friends and family, especially delighting in the youngest members. Always, he took the rough end where there was disagreeable and taxing work to be done. His presence will be missed.

Funeral services were held in the Rhoades Wilson Home on Jan. 31 at 2:00 with the Christian minister, Rev. Larry Squier, officiating.

Music was provided by Mrs Robert Thomas at the organ with Mrs. Neva Fisher and Mrs. Nathena Strange singing "Beyond the Sunset" and "In The Garden."

Pallbearers were nephews Raymond Rice, Hyatt Rice, Harold Schroeter, Virgil Olesen, and grandsons, Jim Rice and Brad Cunning.

Burial was in Rosehill cemetery in Mt. Ayr.
