OBITUARY ~ MARVIN LEE "BUTCH" PERKINS, JR.
January 28, 1950 ~ October 2, 2012
Marvin Lee "Butch" PERKINS, Jr., age 62 of Lamoni, Iowa, son of Marvin Lee PERKINS, Sr. and Mary Jane (TURCK) LOVELL, was born January 28, 1950 in Emmetsburg, Iowa and died October 2, 2012 at the Decatur County Hospital in Leon, Iowa.
Butch graduated from Grand Valley High School in Kellerton, Iowa, where he enjoyed participating in basketball and track.
He married Brenda Joline LEDGERWOOD on June 26, 1976 in Cainsville, Missouri. Three children were born to them: Stephanie Jo, Melanie Leigh, and Aaron Eldon. The family made their home in the Lamoni area.
Butch farmed until the mid-1980's. He later did custom farming, including combining for wheat harvests and baling. Butch worked as a mechanic, truck driver, and recruiter for the Driving Academy in Lamoni. He then began a long and enjoyable career as a contractor in satellite dish sales and installation.
Butch enjoyed hunting in his younger years, fishing, playing cards, working on cars and going to races, concerts at "the boat," and watching television shows. Even cardiac rehab was a fun, social time for him.
Family and extended family meant more to Butch than anything else in the world. He loved watching Aaron wrestle in high school, going to the grandkidsí ballgames, and attending family reunions. Butch was crazy about his grandchildren and proud of his children.
Preceding him in death were his father Marvin PERKINS, Sr.; his stepfather Dean LOVELL; son-in-law Justin HAMAKER; and brother Clarke PERKINS.
Survivors include his children: Stephanie MAHAN and husband Sean of West Des Moines, Iowa, Melanie HAMAKER and Chris DYKES of Leon, and Aaron PERKINS and wife Raven of Decatur, Iowa; grandchildren: Mac McLEAN, Connor and Ian MAHAN, Clay, Augusta, and River HAMAKER, Mesa DYKES, Makenna, Aubri, and Rowan PERKINS; mother Mary LOVELL of Lamoni; sisters and brother: Pat GARELICK of Augusta, Georgia, Barb ONYETT and husband Chuck of Leon, and Tom PERKINS and wife Linda of Lamoni; sister-in-law Trudy SCHOONOVER of Lamoni; half-sisters: Carla HALL and husband Jay of Pleasant Hill, Iowa, Shelly PERKINS and Jodi PERKINS of Des Moines, and Kelly TIGGES and husband Merle of Fenton, Iowa; step-sisters DeeAnn GREEN and husband Steve of Des Moines and Janice RUNGE of Dunedan, Florida; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and many friends.
Services were held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, October 6, 2012 at Slade-O'Donnell Funeral Home, Leon, Iowa. Butch was laid to rest
at Mt. Zion Cemetery southwest of Lamoni, Iowa.
A memorial fund in Butch's name has been established by the family.
