OBITUARY ~ NELLIE H. (KNOX) OWENS

Mrs. Clyde Owens, 71, a life long resident of Clearfield passed away Wednesday morning, Sept 24 at the Des Moines General Hospital following a short illness.

Born as Nellie H Knox on a farm west of Clearfield May 11, 1886, she was the daughter of John and Etta Knox.

She attended the rural school on the home farm. On January 29, 1913 she was united in marriage to Clyde Owens at her home. They established their home three-fourths of a mile north of the Knox homestead where she spent the remainder of her life. Three sons blessed this union: Myron K of Georges Mills, N. H.; Eldon J of Claremont, N. H.; and Paul R of Ipswich, Mass.

Early in her life she united with the Greenwood Methodist Church and later transferred to the Clearfield Methodist where she was a lifelong leader in all departments, president of the Women’s Society for several years, Sunday school Superintendent and Teacher.

She was known as Aunt Nellie to the whole community and her home was always open to new comers, ministers and teachers where she delighted in being a friend to those new in the community, and those without family ties.

Besides her husband she is survived by her 3 sons and their wives, two sisters, Mrs. Blanche Bruner and Clara Knox and three brothers, Bert, Howard and John Knox and one Aunt Mabel Baker all of Clearfield and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Mrs. Dora Harvey in November of 1915. Memorial services were conducted by the pastor Rev Howard F Ball at the Methodist Church assisted by 3 former pastors, Rev 0 B McPherson of Ainsworth, Iowa, Rev M O McKenzie of Grand Junction, and Rev C M Rowe of Grant, Iowa. Burial was in the Clearfield Cemetery.
