OBITUARY ~ ALVERTA "LORRAINE" (LILES) NICHOLS
February 12, 1923 ~ May 28, 2012
Alverta Lorraine NICHOLS was born February 12, 1923 at Hopeville, Iowa to Jay & Opal (HAZEN) LILES. She died peacefully
May 28, 2012 at the Clearview Home in Mount Ayr, Iowa after difficulties from a hip fracture.
Lorraine has a love of teaching, and following Mount Ayr High School graduation, furthered her education at Creston
Junior College to become a teacher. She taught in a rural school for 2 years before marrying Lyndon Dale NICHOLS in 1942.
To this union were born 3 daughters; Dianna Lynne, Gay Annette, and Lori Ann.
Lorraine and Lyndon farmed around Mount Ayr, Iowa their whole lives. Lorraine was a full time housewife and mother,
helping on the farm like most farm wives. She enjoyed the hog operation, and raising the little pigs.
Lorraine's most loved times were spent with family, weaving rugs and trying out new pattern, taking care of a huge garden
to share with family and friends, and sitting on the porch overlooking the cows in the field. The Iowa State Fair was
a yearly family vacation of camping for over 60 years — all farm duties were planned around the fair. Grandchildren,
nieces and nephews, have fond memories of spending time on the farm with Lorraine, riding the hogs, playing in the creek
and Tarzan's jungle, and learning about farm life.
Lyndon died May 30, 1980 at the age of 59 and Lorraine continued with the farm operations under a partnership. She loved
farming and had such a love of the land.
In 1983 Lorraine married Daughn REASONER. Due to health issues Lorraine gave up the pig operation and continued with the
cow herd. They were then able to go to Texas for the winters. Lorraine made many lasting friends from the Valley that
she talked with frequently on the phone until her death. She loved pokeno and remained in charge of the game at the park
until she was unable to go back in 2009.
Daughn and Lorraine moved into the Clearview Estates in 2009, enjoying all of the activities and support that assisted
living brought. Daughn died December 22, 2010. The Estates became family to Lorraine, and she was very happy there.
She pursued her hobby of growing African violets for all to enjoy.
God was a very important part of Lorraine's life, being a member of the Mount Ayr Methodist Church. She was very
interested in daily events, reading 4 different newspapers when able and sending letters and cards to all those whom
she knew for birthdays, illness, or special occasions. The family was always interested to see what "educational
clipping" that Lorraine would send them when she felt an article was appropriate to them.
Lorraine will be greatly missed by her three daughters; Dianna (husband Bill) CAIN of Las Vegas, Nevada, Gay (husband Ed)
