Horace Baker Nelson was born on the family farm May 5, 1914 and departed from
this life May 14, 1998 at the Greater Community Hospital. He was the youngest
son of Orville and Olive Baker Nelson.
Horace attended county schools and then graduated from Clearfield High School
On May 28, 1942 he married Helen Margie Johnston in Stanberry, MO. Born into
this union were Eugene Lee, a stillborn son, Ronald Dee, Ruth Elaine, Leroy
Horace and Randall Lynn.
Horace was inducted into the Army in July 1942, where he served in the 95th
Division with Patton in the Battle of the Bulge in Europe. After his discharge
from the service, Horace farmed in partnership with his father. He continued
farming south of town until he retired and moved into Clearfield.
Horace was a 4-H leader in Taylor County for several years. He also belonged
to the American Legion. Horace valued education and saw to it that all of his
children were able to graduate from college.
Horace was a member of the Clearfield Christian Church. He held several
leadership roles in the church including Elder, Sunday School Superintendent
and a member of the church board for several years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Ronald Dee and brothers,
Lyle and Ivan.
He is survived by his wife Helen, and their children and families Eugene Nick,
Kristin and Lauren Nelson, Ruth, Robert, Megan and Michelle Stowe, Leroy, Mary
Ann, Cliff and Alicia Nelson, Randall, Sherri, Tiffany, Christopher and Ashley
Funeral Services were held Sunday, May 17, 1998 at 2:30 p.m. at the Christian
Church in Clearfield, IA with the Rev. Eydie Stephens officiating. Music was
provided by Jean Huffman, Kathy Nelson, Becky Nelson, and Mary Ellen Spurrier.
Casketbearers were Harold Nelson, Jim Nelson, Kenny Nelson, Allen Brown,
Ronald Brown, and Clinton Brown.
Interment was in the Clearfield Cemetery at Clearfield, IA.
Military graveside rites were provided by Woodside Post #97 of the American
Legion of Clearfield.
Wilson-Watson and Armstrong Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
