OBITUARY RICHARD Y. JOHNSTON

Richard Young JOHNSTON, son of Horace Andrew JOHNSTON and Martha Jane (YOUNG) JOHNSTON, was born at Diagonal, Iowa, on May 29, 1920, and departed this life July 27, 1989, at his home in Colorado Springs, Colorado, at the age of 69 years, one month and 28 days.

During his youth, he lived in Diagonal, Newton, Grinnell, and Mount Ayr, where he attended the public schools and the Christian Church. He was graduated from high school in Mount Ayr in 1938. During World War II he served his country in the U. S. Navy. His main occupation during his life time was an auto salesman. He enjoyed meeting people, making and keeping friends, and his pleasing personality will long be remembered.

In 1938 he was united in marriage to Lola Louise WRIGHT and they resided in Diagonal, Burlington, Creston, and Bedford before moving to Colorado Springs, where they have continued to reside. To this union one daughter, Karen Lu, was born.

His main occupation during his lifetime was an auto salesman. He enjoyed meeting people, making and keeping friends, and his pleasing personality will long be remembered.

He was preceded in death by an infant brother and sister; his parents; two brothers, Robert L. JOHNSTON and Thomas T. JOHNSTON.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, of the home; his daughter, Karen Lu JOHNSTON of Denver, CO.; a granddaughter, Tammy; two great-granddaughters, Tanya and Shannon; a brother, William E. "Bill" JOHNSTON and wife Alice Mae of Bedford; relatives and many friends. He was a kind and considerate person and he will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

During World War II he served his country in the U.S. Navy.

Graveside services were conducted Tuesday, August 1, 1989, by Rev. Carl CUMMINGS at Rose Hill Cemetery in Mount Ayr, Iowa. Shum-Nevinger Funeral Home of Bedford was in charge of arrangements.
