OBITUARY - CLARK MILLS PRATT II

Clark Mills PRATT II was born on November 6, 1881, in Middle Fork Township, Ringold County, Iowa, the sixth of seven children and first of two sons born to Levi Clark PRATT and Sarah (GOODALL) PRATT. He was a farmer and active in the Hickory Grove Advent Christian Church, which his father had helped to organize.

He was married to Effie Mae MASDEN on August 14, 1907. About five years later he took his family to Colorado, where they homesteaded near Boyero in Lincoln County. In early 1919 the family returned to Ringgold County, where Clark farmed the rest of his life.

Clark was one of the founding fathers of the Advent Christian Church in Mount Ayr, Iowa, not far from his last farm to the northwest of the county seat. He served as a Deacon of the small congregation and as a Sunday School teacher. In all things he was a pious, faithful person and committed disciple of Jesus Christ and member of the Church.

In the spring of 1942, when he was 60 years old, Clark consented to have prostate surgery at the Methodist Hospital in Des Moines. Pressured by the calendar and what he knew would be a period of inactive convalesence after his surgery, he felt his fields needed to be plowed before he was hospitalized. Much of that job was done in the rain. Whether before or after his surgery, he came down with pneumonia, unfortunately this was just a few months before penicillin was made available to the civilian population. Funeral services were held at the Hickory Grove Church and he was buried near his parents in the cemetery behind the church. It was a day of heavy rain, with the church filled with family and friends - and many people under umbrellas outside the meeting house. The burial, in the driving rain, was a muddy and very emotional occasion for all concerned.
