OBITUARY - DENZEL GRANT PLATT

American Flag.jpg Denzel Grant PLATT was born August 21, 1922 the son of Grant and Columbia (KIDWELL) PLATT in Warsaw, Missouri. In 1928 he moved with his family to Hawthorne, Iowa where his father farmed.

He enlisted in the Army Air Force January 27, 1943 and was trained as a radio operator and mechanic. He was sent to a maintenance depot in Blackpool, England. He arrived at Warton Air Depot about the time it changed to the U.S. and acquired the designation of Base Air Depot #2. He served with the 8th Air Force, 36th Fighter Group. He worked in the carburetor shop, then in the landing gear retract shop. Later he worked on the gliders that were used for landing men and equipment on the Normandy invasion. Near the end of the war he was shipped to France and German and was sent home by way of Belgium. He crossed the ocean in a welded steel hulled Kaiser ship. He was discharged February 22, 1946.

He married Bernadene SAVILLE August 21, 1948 at the Presbyterian Church in Omaha, Nebraska. The first 8 years of their marriage was spent farming. He started working in Red Oak, [Montomery County] Iowa, installing water and heating systems, and installing and repairing rural water pumps and windmills. He and a friend Thomas MINARD had their place of business, Minard and Platt Plumbing and Heating, located on the east side of Highway 34 across the street from Union Carbide Corp. In November 1964 he turned the business over to Tom and moved to Napa, California where he spent the next 19 years. While there he worked for Kaiser Steel and C&H Sugar Refinery. He retired from C&H in 1981 and returned to Iowa where they purchased 120 acres from Bernadene's parent estate. There he farmed and raised cattle. His wife Bernadene preceded him in death on June 27th, 1996. He spent the next several years helping his daughter and her husband restore their home in Allendale, Missouri. He continued to be busy with his farm. He still raised cattle, but now he also raised goats.

He loved to go dancing at the country music shows with his friend Dorothy BARBER. He loved a good waltz and tried to go dancing several nights a week. He visited with all his friends swapping stories and he always had a joke to tell.

He has two children, Michele (Joe) HERTL of Allendale, Mo. and Martin (Katy) PLATT of San Jose, California. He has 4 grandchildren. Sherri JOHNSON of Fair Oaks, California, Stacy WALKER of Fort Pierce , Florida, Andrew PLATT of San Jose, California and Christy PLATT of San Jose, California. He has 2 great grandchildren, Ryan GORMAN of Sacramento, California and Nicholas PLATT of San Jose, California.

He is survived by brothers Ray PLATT of Red Oak, Iowa, Roy (Gretchen) PLATT of Cottonwood, Arizona, Keith (Louise) PLATT of Red Oak, Iowa and sister Columbia MAGNUSON of Red Oak, Iowa, brother-in-laws Dale ENGLAND, Berthoud, Colorado, Clyde (Dolores) SAVILLE, Wheaten, Illinois, Oliver PARKER, Kellerton, Iowa and sister-in-laws Esther PARKER of Creston, Iowa, and Ruth SAVILLE of Mount Ayr, Iowa and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, November 6, at the United Methodist Church in Redding, Iowa, conducted by Rev. Susan Thomas. Music will be provided by Jodi and Marvel LAWRENCE. Burial, with military rites conducted by Redding Post #617, is in the Redding Cemetery. Wilson-Watlson & Armstrong Funeral Home in Mount Ayr is in charge of the arrangements. A memorial fund has been established in his name.
