Civil War Flags.jpg

Thomas PITTMAN of Lotts Creek Township died at 10:30 Saturday forenoon, of typhoid fever, after an illness of nearly two weeks. He was 60 years, one month and ten days old. Mr. PITTMAN located in what is now Lotts Creek Township in 1859, and has been a resident of that community ever since. He served during the war in Company C, 51st Missouri infantry. He was married in 1869 to Sarah Jane CASE, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob CASE of Ringgold. Of their nine children seven survive with their mother to mourn the death of a kind and devoted husband and father. They are as follows: Mary CAMP of Eagleville, Mo.; Mrs. Dove McCORMICK of Kansas; Mrs. Ida GRAY of Creston; Mrs. Wm WHITED of Ringgold; Edward PITTMAN of Grand Junction, Colo; George PITTMAN at home; and Mrs. Charles SMITH of Ringgold. Mrs. SMITH is dangerously ill, and was unable to see her father during his last illness.

Mr. PITTMAN joined the Advent Christian church six years ago. He was industrious, honest, kind in his family, and one of the best neighbors, the latter fact being attested by the unusually great number of persons who attended his funeral, which was conducted at 3 o'clock Sunday from the Evangelical church at Ringgold by Rev. S. C. WADDING. The Civil war veterans of the community attended in a body and buried their comrade with a soldier's honor [Ringgold Cemetery, Lotts Creek Township of Ringgold County, Iowa].
