OBITUARY - EDNA V. MERRITT PERKINS

Edna V. MERRITT PERKINS, 90, of Afton, died Jan. 13, 2007, at Afton Care Center.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16, at the United Methodist Church in Arispe. The Rev. Karen GARRISON and the Rev. Merlin WILKINS will officiate. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery, south of Creston. Open visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today with the family receiving friends 6 to 8 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home, 612 N. Dodge St., Afton. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Arispe United Methodist Church. Online condolences may be left under the obituary category at:

Edna V. MERRITT PERKINS, daughter of Gertrude (VENN) and William E. PRIEST, was born Nov. 5, 1916, in Madison County. She was educated in a rural country school northeast of Creston and Creston High School.

In 1936, Edna married Jonas MERRITT in Shenandoah on the KMA Radio Station. They farmed east of Creston on the MERRITT family farm. They farmed in Union and Ringgold counties until moving to a farm south of Arispe in 1948. She worked as a cook at Arispe School and as a nursing home worker in Mount Ayr. In 1964, they retired from the farm. They operated the Union County Home for a time, then she worked at Woodward State Mental Hospital, before returning to Creston to operate a nursing home out of her own home. She worked for the state of Iowa as a home health aid, retiring in 1980. Jonas died in 1977.

On June 10, 1984, Edna married Roy PERKINS on a farm near Tingley. They lived in Afton. Edna was a member of Arispe United Methodist Church, church quilters, and Order of the Eastern Star of Afton.

Survivors include her son, LeRoy MERRITT of Afton, former daughter-in-law, Marian GRANT of Creston; two sons-in-law, Orville HUNEMULLER of Arispe and Ray (wife Merry) STROUD of Indianola; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

In addition to her first husband, Edna was preceded in death by her parents; second husband in 1991; two daughters, Loretta HUNEMULLER and Shirley STROUD; grandson Darin MERRITT; six brothers, Elton, John, Bill, Vern, Carl and Marion PRIEST; sister Vera EIGHME and half-sister Marjorie.

She enjoyed fishing and camping trips to Lake Rathbun and Canada, traveling to different states, gardening, farming, entertaining her grandkids, and gathering the family. Survivors include her son, LeRoy MERRITT of Afton, her former daughter-in-law, Marian GRANT of Creston; two sons-in-law, Orville HUNEMULLER of Arispe and Ray (wife Merry) STROUD of Indianola; 9 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
