OBITUARY - MRS. MARIA PAYTON.
Maria, daughter of John and Sarah JAMES, was born February 21, 1852, near Tipton, Indiana, and departed this life at her home
in Kellerton, Iowa., August 14, 1932. Her life companion and husband preceded her in death nine years ago last February. At an
early age she moved with her parents to Iowa, settling near Lamoni.
She was unided in marriage to James Henry PAYTON at
Lamoni, Iowa, December 16, 1872. Eight children were born to bless this home - five boys and three girls, one son, John
Wesley, died in infancy. The others all survive to mourn the loss of a faithful and devoted mother. They are Mrs. Dora WHITAKER of
Colorado Springs, Colo., Addis (sic), Lewis and Charles, all of Lamoni, Mrs. Jesse WION of Mount Ayr and Mrs. Maud BOGUE of
Independence, Mo. In addition the deceased leaves twenty-four grand children and seven great grandchildren; also three sisters,
Mrs. Frank SPURRIER of Scottsbluff, Neb., Mrs. Levi BROOKS of Lamoni and Mrs. R. C. BOGER of Davis City; one brother, John JONES (sic)
of Davis City besides a number of nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
When a young girl she confessed her
faith in the Savior and united with the Methodist church.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Christian
church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. KRATZER, and burial was made in the Elk Chapel cemetery [Decatur County, Iowa].
NOTE: James Henry PAYTON, husband of Maria (JAMES), was born on February 3, 1848, and died February 5, 1923 with interment
at Elk Chapel Cemetery. Of Maria (JAMES) and James Henry PAYTON's children:
Aldis PAYTON was born in 1878, and died in 1957 with interment at Elk Chapel Cemetery;
Jesse L. (PAYTON) WION was born in 1880 and died in 1961 with interment at Elk Chapel Cemetery; and
Charles A. PAYTON was born in 1888, and died in 1972 with interment at Elk Chapel
