Oliver attended and graduated from Redding High School in 1934. While in school he enjoyed basketball, baseball, playing the trombone and especially singing in the school operettas. After high school he would hitchhike to Kossuth County in northern Iowa to pick corn by hand. Oliver first began farming on his own near Gravity. Oliver and Lavene lived and farmed near Diagonal, Iowa most of their married life. Four children blessed their marriage; Lloyd, Larry, Robert, and Janis. Oliver also worked for 5 years measuring ground for the ASC office. Oliver was baptized by sprinkling in the Diagonal Presbyterian Church. He was a 4-H leader for 5 years and had served on the county 4-H board. After Lavene’s health failed, Oliver moved to Kellerton where he lived 10 years until entering Clearview Home on September, 2009.
