RUSSELL L. OLNEY
Russell L. OLNEY, 94, died Saturday, September 20, 2008, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center. Funeral services will be held
at 12:30pm, Wednesday, September 24, at Iles Funeral Homes – Dunn's Chapel. Burial will be at Masonic Cemetery. Visitation
will be 6-8pm, Tuesday at the funeral home.
Russell was born, February 24, 1914, in Mount Ayr, Iowa to Harrison and Ethel OLNEY. He graduated from Mount Ayr High
School, where he participated in a wide range of sports, such as basketball, track, football and tennis. He was also a
violinist in the orchestra. Russell studied accounting at Drake University. During his career he worked for Standard Oil,
Texaco, Solar Aircraft and John Deere.
Russell married Lola Mae STEPHENS also from the Mount Ayr area, on September 18, 1937, in Creston, Iowa. Russell and Lola
had two sons, Gary and Allan. Gary and his wife Mary Jane of West Des Moines have two daughters, Jennifer and Melissa and
Jennifer has a daughter, Madison. Allan and his wife Juanita have a son, Allan II. Allan II and his wife Rhonda have two
sons, Alex and Nicholas. Russell is also survived by his brother, Harold of Beaverdale.
Russell was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Lola and his brothers, Alfred, Edward and Leslie.
After his retirement, Russell loved to help fix things for this family and friends. He would clean their driveways in the
winter, mow their yards in the summer, help repair plumbing or electrical problems or fix their cars any time. He was
always there when family and friends needed him. Russell also enjoyed playing cards and dancing.
For over fifty years, Russell has been an active member of the West Gate Adelphic Masonic Lodge #509, Consistory and the
Uptown Lions, where he served as president. In fact, he was so active in the Lodge that he served as Worshipful Master of
West-Gate on two different occasions, 1961 and 1975. Russell was a member of the Past Master's club and served as High
Priest Ascalan Chapter and President of the Shrine Tux Brigade in 1964. Russell also served as a volunteer at the Blood
Bank of Central Iowa, delivering blood where needed. He also volunteered at various Shrine Hospitals, worked on the Shrine
Circus, and other Shrine activities. He was active in classic car parades.

Interment was in Masonic Cemetery, Des Moines, Polk, IA.
