The Mount Ayr Record-News

LOLA (STEPHENS) OLNEY

Lola (STEPHENS) OLNEY, daughter of John and Pearl STEPHENS was born in Mount Ayr, Iowa on July 29, 1910. She attended grade school near the family farm in Caledonia, Iowa and high school in Mount Ayr, Iowa. She finished what is now the University of Northern Iowa at the age of eighteen and received a two-year teaching certificate. She began teaching in the high school at Kinset, Iowa.

While teaching in the high school in Elston, Iowa, she met Russell OLNEY who was from Mount Ayr. They were married in Creston, Iowa, September 18, 1937. Russell and Lola had two sons, Gary and Allan. She finished her career at Valley High School in West Des Moines. There she taught English, directed plays, and worked as a guidance counselor.

She completed her Bachelorís and Masterís degrees at Drake University after moving to Des Moines in 1938. While working and raising a family she completed her education by attending classes at night and during the summers.

Besides her husband, Russell, Lola is survived by her brother, Raymond STEPHENS two sons, Gary and Allan OLNEY; and three grandchildren, Jennifer, Allan, and Melissa OLNEY.

Lola lived her years to the fullest with her family and friends, and will be remembered by all.
