OBITUARY - RUBY ELINOR (BICKEL) O'CONNOR
Ruby Elinor (BICKEL) O'CONNOR was born February 18,
1919 in Litchfield, Nebraska to Henry Carl and
Katherine Mable (SHEEHAN) BICKEL. During the Dust
Bowl Era her family moved to Mount Ayr, Iowa where
she met her husband, Maurice Griffin O'CONNOR Jr.
They were married fifty-one years and to this union
were born four children: Jane, Pat, Norma, and Jim.
Ruby was a long-time resident of Blockton, Iowa and
later moved to Bedford and then New Market, Iowa,
where she resided until April of 2007 when she moved
to Goldenrod Manor in Clarinda due to recent
deteriorating health. She passed away at Goldenrod
Manor Thursday, September 13, 2007.
Ruby was a loving housewife, mother and grandmother. After raising her children, she furthered her education and became
a licensed practical nurse. she worked at the Page County Home and for several years at the Bedford Nursing Home.
past Ruby and her husband owned Cloverly Stock Farms in Blockton, Iowa. Ruby always had a large garden and did much
canning. She will be remembered for her good home cooking and pie baking, never using a recipe. She had a love for flowers
and other hobbies including hand embroidering and latch hooking.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Maurice
Griffin O'CONNOR, Jr.; brother, Fritz BICKEL and his wife fern; brother Bill BICKEL; sisters, Ruth DAVIS and her husband
Russell and Katherine WIEST and her husband Harland; brother, Floyd BICKEL; sister, Frances SHUMAN and husband Clarie;
brother-in-law, Larry WENTZ; son-in-law, Michael WILMES and grandson, Jason Alan WILMES.
Ruby is survived by children,
Maurine Jane and Gerald LARSON of Grayling, Michigan, Maurice Griffin (Pat) O'CONNOR of New Market, Iowa, Norma Jean
WILMES of New Market, Iowa, and James Edward and Selma O'CONNOR of Blockton, Iowa; sisters, Blanche BICKEL of Omaha,
Nebraska, Norma WEEHLER and husband Lee of Benton, Iowa, and Edna WENTZ of Atwater, California; sisters-in-law, Mildred
BICKEL of Mount Ayr, Iowa, and Lisa BICKEL of Glen Burnie, Maryland; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren, and many
nieces and nephews.
Services were held Monday, September 17, 2007, at Memory Cemetery, New Market, with Rev. Dan
WIEBESEIK officiating. Memorials are suggested to New Market United Methodist Church or Page County Cancer Socity. Walker-Merrick
Funeral Home of Clarinda was in charge of arrangements.
