OBITUARY - EASTERLY "EKE" NELSON

Easterly NELSON was born March 26, 1910 near Defiance, Iowa. He was the son of Lars and Anna Kristine NELSON. His parents were both born in Denmark and they were married after they came to America. When "Eke" was nine-years-old the family moved to Shannon City. Six years later they mvoed to the western part of Ringgold county where he farmed with his brothers Astor and Gardner.

He entered military service on July 14, 1942, and served in Europe. He was honorably discharged on December 6, 1945. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 172.

On Dec. 21, 1948, he was married to Irma LYNCH and they established their home in Mount Ayr. They have a son, Royce, who farms near Mount Ayr, and a daughter Kay Ann of the home. He will also be greatly missed by his daughter-in-law, LaVonne, and granddaughter, Jennifer.

He and Irma were baptized and became members of the First Christian Church in Mount Ayr at the same time, April 5, 1953. Easterly was serving as a Deacon at the time of his passing, as he had done for several years.

He lived most of his life in Ringgold county. He worked as a farmer, hogbuyer and trucker. Since retiring he has helped his son on the farm.

Eke delighted in spreading cheer and good will to his friends and relatives with his witty stories and jokes.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Rose BLACK, and brothers, Gardner and Edward and a nephew, Laverne BLACK.

He will be deeply missed by all his relatives, neighbors and friends.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7, 1981 from Rhoades-Wilson Funeral Home in Mount Ayr. Pastors Phil and Doris KINTON officiated. Organist was Mike GREENE and vocalist was Jim WEBB. Casketbearers were Bob ROE, Lyle MAIN, Harold WEBB, Lyle MINNICK, Bill FARRELL and Dave STEWART. Honorary casketberes were Randy McDONNELL, Bob ERICKSON, Homer BUTLER and Rex GALLOWAY.

Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery at Mount Ayr. Military graveside rites were conducted by Ringgold Post No. 172, American Legion.
