OBITUARY ~ MARTHA ELZENA MURPHY

Martha Elzena MURPHY, daughter of Charley and Lucinda MOLER, was born April 17, 1887, near Irena in Worth county, Missouri, and departed this life February 4, 1970, in the Ringgold County Hospital in Mount Ayr, at the age of 82 years.

On January 25, 1908 she was unied in marriage with William B. MURPHY and of this union were born three children. Mr. and Mrs. MURPHY spent most of their lives in Ringgold county. In 1933, they moved to Taylor county and farmed there until their retirement about 12 years ago. Since that time, they had resided in Hopkins, Mo., where her hobby was raising a garden and flowers.

Early in life, she was baptized into the Methodist Church. In 1955, she joined the American Legion Auxiliary and became a Gold Star Mother. While health permitted, she was a member of the Merry Ridge Social Club.

She was a kind and loving mother; always had a smile for everyone and stood ready to help those in need. She will be sadly missed by all those who knew and loved her.

Mrs. MURPHY was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Verle William MURPHY, who was fatally wounded in action during World War II; her parents; two sisters, Mrs. Bertha RICHARDSON and Mrs. Lilla NORRIS; two brothers, Elmer and Bruce MOLER, and a grandson, Bill MURPHY.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Leon LYONS of Hopkins; a son, Flavel MURPHY of Bedford; three sisters, Mrs. Flossie LAMB of Mount Ayr, Mrs. Deva SMITH of Redding and Mrs. Rosa THORNTON of St. Joseph, Mo.; a brother, Charles MOLER of Lakeside, Calif.; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held February 7 from the Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford, conducted by the Rev. Ollie ODEL. Burial was in the Fairview Cemetery at Bedford.
