Verlea Lantz, 76, of Burlington, died at 8:18 PM Thursday, September 18, 2014, at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City.
Born October 26, 1937, in Ellston, IA, she was the daughter of Aden Ray and Valiere M. Creveling Stewart. On August 7, 1960, she married Billie Lee Lantz in Ellston, IA.
Verlea worked as a babysitter and at Burlington Medical Center, Lehigh Leopold, Automatic Vending Service, and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
She was a 1956 graduate of Ellston High School, where she played basketball and was the class valedictorian.
She loved to read, crochet, knit, and play card and board games. She also enjoyed camping, going square dancing, and spending time with family and friends at Coralville Lake and Sun Valley Lake.
Survivors include her husband, Billie Lee Lantz of Burlington; three daughters, Denise (Glenn) Nelson and Tanya (Todd) Shanstrom both of Burlington, and Cherri (Jon) James of Albia; five grandchildren, Lacey (J.R.) Henderson, Kendra James, Zachary James, Colton (Stacy) Shanstrom, and Shyanne Shanstrom; three great-grandchildren, Johnny, Riley, and Sadie; her mother, Valiere M. Stewart of Albia; three brothers, Dean (Jeanne) Stewart of Burlington, David (Sheila) Stewart of Winterset, and Dale (Lorrie) Stewart of Thayer, IA; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father and one sister.
Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Thielen Crematory.
The memorial service for Mrs. Lantz will be 2:30 PM Saturday, September 27, 2014, at Ellston United Methodist Church with Pastor Bruce Giese officiating. A time of food and fellowship will be held at 1:00 PM prior to the memorial service on Saturday.
A memorial has been established for the American Liver Foundation.
