OBITUARY ~ ELZA ADELBERT LAIRD.
Elza Adelbert LAIRD was born near Mount Ayr, Iowa, on August 13, 1871, and departed this life at his home in Kellerton,
Friday, September 2, 1945 at the age of 74 years, one month and eight days.
Mr. LAIRD grew to manhood on the farm,
and at the age of 17, he commenced farming for himself and continued this occupation for 47 years, at which time his health
broke, making it necessary for him to live in quiet confinement the last ten years.
In 1888 he became a member of the Mt.
Zion church and will be remembered as an honest, conscientious, hard-working father and neighbor.
On September 8, 1893,
he was united in marriage to Josephine MERRITT at Bedford. To this union on child, Florence, was born. Death claimed her
at the age of six; a loss to her father which was never replaced inspiete of his later unselfish devotion to a large
On November 3, 1909, he married Mrs. Jennie GRINDROD STUCK of Mount Ayr, whose two little girls he accepted
as his own, throughout the remainder of his life. Besides his wife and these two, now Mrs. Mildred HAILEY, of
Shenandoah, and Mrs. Josephine HACKER, of Mount Ayr, the five children born of this marriage survive. They are
Helen TISDEL, of Denver, Colo., Glen, of Kellerton, Genevieve BURRIS, of Des Moines, Richard, of Des Moines, and
Ruth BARBOUR, of Pheonix (sic), Ariz.
The family mourns the loss of one who lived a life of untiring determination to
benefit his loved ones in every physical way possible. Besides his immediate family, he is survived by one sister,
Mrs. Emery SALTZMAN, of Tingley, one brother, William, of Eagle, Colo., six grandchildren, Maxine HALTEZ, Rena and
Karen LAIRD, Monte BARBOUR, Patricia and Richard TISDEL, and a host of other relatives and friends.
were conducted by the Rev. Verne WEIGEL at the Kellerton Methodist church, Sunday afternoon, September 23. "Beautiful
Isle of Somewhere" and "Rock of Ages" were beautifully sung by Mr. and Mrs. Russell HUGHES with Mrs. Hallie MYERS
at the piano.
Pallbearers were Wallace FARMER, W. H. MOSBARGER, Johnny BROWN, Luther COX, Loren RUSH and Victor
SKINNER. Interment was in the Maple Row cemetery in Kellerton.
