OBITUARY - JOHN WILLIAM "BILL" MOON

1931 - 2009

American Flag.jpg Funeral services for Bill MOON, age 77 of formerly of Bedford, who left for Heaven at 4:40 p.m. on April 14, 2009, were held at the new Life Missionary Church in Bedford on Monday, April 20, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. Visitation was held at the Ritchie Funeral Home in Bedford on Sunday, April 19 from 1 to 4 with the family greeting friends from 2 to 4. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Blockton, Iowa. Memorials can be sent as listed below in the obituary. Memories can be shared with the family at www.ritchiefuneralhome.com. Arrangements were entrusted to the Ritchie funeral Home of Bedford.

John William MOON, better known as “Bill” was born in rural Blockton, Iowa on June 22, 1931 to George William and Guelda Myrtle (STEPHENS) MOON. He grew up attending country school and graduated from Blockton High School in 1949. Bill gave his heart to Jesus Christ at a Billy GRAHAM Crusade when he was 19 years of age. On November 25, 1951 he was married to his dearest friend, Helen WINTERMUTE. They became the parents of five boys, one daughter, and 11 foster children.

Bill was drafted into the US Army in January, 1952. He served with an anti-aircraft unit in Germany. Upon his discharge, he and Helen farmed southeast of Mount Ayr.

While there, Steve, John, and Don were born. In 1960, the moved to a farm near Guilford, Missouri, where Mike was born. Later, they moved to a farm near Conway, Iowa where Mary was born in 1965. While living on their much loved farm south of Bedford, Iowa, the Lord brought Bob to truly be a part of their family. In 1984 they moved to Paris, Texas.

In 1989 the Lord called Bill and Helen to serve as missionaries with World Gospel Mission. To date, they have served for 20 years as missionaries. They served in Honduras and in Argentina. In 1999, the mission requested that they move to McAllen, Texas where Bill did a variety of ministries, including the remodeling of the guesthouse and overseeing the completion of the first phase of Taylor Community Center. It brought him great joy to receive the occupancy permit for the community center so the school is able to use the facility for classrooms, a chapel, and a gym. Bill was busy with plans to finish the rest of the center when he was diagnosed with acute leukemia. He spent nearly four months in MD Anderson Cancer center in Houston and his remaining time with his family in Paris, Texas. Being a long time friend of the Lord Jesus Christ, he was ready to go be with Him. Bill expressed that at the time of home going he would appreciate any memorials be given to the Taylor Community Center Fund for the completion of the second phase. Memorials may also be sent to World Gospel Mission, PO Box 948, Marion, Ind., 46952-0948. These should be designated for the Bill MOON Memorial.

Bill was preceded in death by his father, George MOON; mother, Guelda STEPHENS MOON; brother Eugene; and granddaughter, Erica Leigh MOON, (Salta, Argentina).

Left to cherish Bill’s memory are his wife Helen, children: Steve and Kathleen MOON (Falls Church, Va.), Bob and Eileen SMITH (Cottonwood, Calif.), John and Jan MOON (Paris, Tex.), Don and Glenda MOON (Mendoza, Argentina), Mike and Gayla MOON (Blockton, Iowa), and Jim and Mary NEWMAN (Santa Cruz, Bolivia). His surviving grandchildren are Stephen MOON (Ann Arbor, Mich.), Jon MOON (Ann Arbor, Mich.), Michelle MOON (Towa, Japan), Aaron SMITH (Rancho Cordoba, Calif.), Eric SMITH (Rancho Cordoba, Calif.), Jordan and Ashley SMITH DeLORTO (Cottonwood, Calif.), Bill and Andria MOON (Paris, Tex.), Dustin and Jala MOON NATION (Blossom, Tex.), Clayton and Jodi MOON WATKINS (Bogata, Tex.), Jami MOON (Paris, Tex.), Brad and Elizabeth MOON CARTER (Kansas City, Mo.), Thomas and Emily MOON TODD, (Somerset, Ky.), Elicia MOON (Wilmore, Ky.), Christie MOON (Grande Prairie, Alberta, Canada), Justin MOON (Grande Prairie, Alberta, Canada), Jordan NEWMAN (Santa Cruz, Bolivia), Catherine Newman (Santa Cruz, Bolivia), and Danielle Newman (Santa Cruz, Bolivia). Great-grandchildren are Jackson and Jacey MOON (Bill and Andria MOON's children), Scout NATION (Dustin and Jala NATION's daughter), and Ayla DeLORTO (Jordan and Ashley DeLORTO's daughter). Bill is also survived by his sister, Phyllis FAUBION, (Mt. Ayr, Iowa) and his brother-in-law and sister, Eugene and Martha PARMAN, (Mesa, Ariz.). He will also be missed by all of his nieces and nephews and many, many friends.

Bill was a devoted husband, father and servant to the Lord. His enthusiasm, humor, insight and kindness will be missed by his family.
