Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa

OBITUARY - WILLIAM M. "BILL" MONAGHAN

William Martin MONAGHAN, son of Thomas and Margaret MONAGHAN, was born July 30, 1936, on a farm near Winterset, and passed away June 30, 1978, at his home in Mount Ayr at the age of 41 years, 11 months.

He spent most of his life in Mount Ayr, graduating from Mount Ayr High School in 1954. On Jan. 27, 1960, he was married to Marilyn DAVENPORT, also of Mount Ayr.

BIll was active in civic and business activity in the community. For 21 years, he was employed at HORNE Rexall Pharmacy. For a time, he was co-owner and then sole owner of the Dairy Sweet and for the last few years has owned and operated the B&M Drive-In and a catering service.

A well-known sports enthusiast, he served as football and basketball referee in this area and also umpired softball and baseball. Since he was an avid golfer, a memorial fund has been established in his name for the Mount Ayr Golf and Country Club.

Bill served in the National Guard for five years and was a member of the American Legion. He was also active in the Mount Ayr chapter of Jaycees, having served as its president, and was a member of the Mount Ayr Lions Club.

He is survived by his loving wife, Marilyn; his parents-in-law and grandparents-in-law, to whom he was devoted; a sister, Gertrude HOLLAND and her husband, Merle, of Norwalk, California; two brothers, Thomas and his wife, Luella, of Arabi, LA., and Robert and his wife, Mary, Des Moines; a sister-in-law, Betty MONAGHAN, Mount Ayr; seven nieces; 10 nephews; and a host of friends.

Preceding him in death were his parents; a sister, Mary; a brother, Jack, and a brother Jimmy, who is presumed dead, although his whereabouts are unknown.

Bill will be sorely missed by his family and friends.

Funeral services were held Monday, July 3, from the Rhoades-Wilson Funeral Home with Father Joe McDONNELL officiating. Organist Mike GREENE accompanied vocalists Mr. and Mrs. William HAROVER.

NOTE: Interment at Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr, Iowa.
