OBITUARY - Dr. DUANE E. MITCHELL, M.D.

American Flag.jpg Dr. Duane E. MITCHELL, 84, of Mount Ayr died Saturday, August 19, 2006, at Ringgold County Hospital in Mount Ayr.

Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, August 23, at Mount Ayr First Christian Church. The Rev. Alan RUSK and the Rev. John BRILLO will officiate the service. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery at Mount Ayr. Open visitation will be after 10 a.m. Tuesday, with family receiving friends 6 to 8 p.m. at Wilson-Watson and Armstrong Funeral Home, 205 W. Monroe St., Mount Ayr. Memorials may be directed to Ringgold County Hospital or the Mount Ayr High School scholarship fund.

Dr. Duane MITCHELL, son of Audra O. (DRUMMINS) and Robert P. MITCHELL, was born August 11, 1922, in Grant City, Mo. On June 4, 1942, he married Joyce G. ADAMS in Rock Port, Mo. He graduated from Grant City High in 1940 and the University of Colorado Medical School in 1952. During World War II he was a member of the U.S. Air Force and was held as a prisoner of war after being shot down over Germany.

He was a physician in Mount Ayr for 45 years, during which he had a general practice, obstetrics., surgery and served as Ringgold County medical examiner. He served on Southwestern Community College Board, Mount Ayr Library Board and Iowa and Missouri medical associations. He was a member of American Legion Post #172, retired officers association, VFW, The Purple Heart Association, The Caterpillar Club, Mount Ayr Masonic Lodge, ZgA Shrine and Mount Ayr First Christian Church.

Survivors include his wife, Joy MITCHELL of Mount Ayr; daughter Cherri (husband Verd) BAILEY of Estes Park, Colo.; son Steve (wife Cindy) MITCHELL of Mount Ayr; sister Doris ARNOLD of St. Joseph, Mo.; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Dr. MITCHELL was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Georgia FRIDAY and Ada RAY; and two brothers, Robert and Dale MITCHELL.
