OBITUARY - WALTER JAMES MILLER

Walter James MILLER was born May 2, 1923 near Grand River, Iowa to Phillip Andrew “Aug” MILLER and Nellie Mae (BOLES) MILLER. He departed this life on September 25, 2003 at the age of 80 years.

Walter grew up with his parents and younger sisters, Loretta Fay (MILLER) DUFF and Annetta Mae (MILLER) WAYMAN. He attended South White Oak, Woodard, and Brick Schools. It was at this juncture, he developed a great love of nature and farming with horses.

He was united in marriage to Marjorie Eileen JACKSON on June 10, 1945 at the Methodist Church in Osceola, Walter and Eileen had four children: Katheryn Mae (MILLER) SCOVILLE, Carol Ann (MILLER) ANDREAS, James Walter MILLER and Ronald Rex MILLER.

From the time of their marriage, Walter and Eileen farmed near Grand River until 1971 when they moved near Kellerton. Walt also engaged in road construction, commercial driving, communications repair and right-of-way maintenance. [Walter was also our school bus driver.] After moving, his primary vocation was in the allied building trades.

After retiring, Walt, an avid sportsman, continued fishing, woodworking, gardening and visiting with friends.

His passing leaves behind four children, two great-grandchildren and a plethora of cousins, nephews, nieces and friends. His ashes will be scattered per his request [which was to be scattered over the grave of his wife, Eileen at the Munyon Cemetery near Grand River, Decatur County, Iowa].

OBITUARY ~ WALTER JAMES MILLER
2nd Obituary appearing below 1st one (above)

walter James Miller, oldest child of Phillip Andrew and Nellie Mae (BOLES) MILLER, was born May 2, 1923 in Decatur County, Iowa. He died September 25, 2003 in Mount Ayr, Iowa.

He attended the Woodard and Brick [present day GV Museum located in Grand River park] country schools in rural Decatur county through the completion of eighth grade. After completing his schooling, he started farming with his uncles, Everett Lowell and Orel Dale BOLES, north of Grand River, Iowa. During this time, he met Marjorie Eileen JACKSON (of Kellerton, Iowa) a teacher at the Foland School [northeast of Grand River]. They were married at the Methodist Church in Osceola, Iowa on June 10, 1945. To this union four children were born: Katheryn Mae, Carol Ann, James Walter and Ronald Rex.

Walter continued farming in northern Decatur county where the family moved into the Walter and Susie BOLES family farm in 1954. While working the family farm and farming with Orel, he also worked for Center Milk of Creston, the Rural Electric Cooperative in Osceola, Miller Manufacturing of Osceola, as a bus driver for the Grand Valley school district and the Grand River Mutual Telephone Company. In 1971, Walt and Eileen sold the farm and moved to Kellerton where he lived until his death. While living in Kellerton, he worked as a janitor for Grand Valley high school and then started his own carpentry business that he continued until he was limited by poor health in his latter years.

Walter enjoyed the outdoors. His favorite times were pheasant and coon hunting and fishing trips to Canada with friends. He also loved his four-legged companions, especially a border collie, Tippy, and a Brittany spaniel, Lady. Later in his life, he enjoyed doing woodworking projects for friends and family and working in his flower and vegetable gardens.

Walter was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Nellie MILLER, and his wife, Marjorie Eileen.

He is survived by his children: Katheryn SCOVILL and husband Dennis of Ozark, Missouri, Carol ANDREAS and husband Earl of West Des Moines, Iowa, James of Westwood, Kansas and Rex of Kellerton; grandchildren, Paul SCOVILLE and wife Caryn and children Jack and Laura of Columbia, Missouri and Sheri Denise SCOVILLE of Grandview, Missouri; sisters, Loretta Faye DUFF and husband Hurbert of Van Wert, Iowa and Annetta May WAYMAN and husband Larry of Indianola, Iowa; step-grandchildren, Andrea CALIGER and husband Roger and children, Scott ANDREAS and wife Denise, all of Ankeny, Iowa, and Brian ANDRESS and wife Kat and children of Clive, Iowa; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. He will be missed by all.

No services were held. Memorials may be sent to the American Heart Association.
