The Mount Ayr Record-News, 1928

OBITUARY - MRS. J. O. MILLER.

J. Miller gravestone.jpg Emily "Josephine" SPANGLER, daughter of William and Emily SPANGLER, was born near Fountain Green, Hancock county, Illinois, April 24, 1853.

When she was thirteen years old her parents moved to Carthage, Ill., where she lived until her marriage to James Oliver MILLER on December 26, 1872. The spring of 1873 they came to Iowa, making the trip in a covered wagon. They were among the first settlers of Ringgold county, taking active interest in the development of the religious and educational work of their new home, where she lived until her death on August 22, 1928.

To this union were born eight children of whom three with her husband have preceded her to the better world. The two oldest daughters died in 1895, the oldest son in 1900 and her husband in 1913.

At the age of fifteen she united with the Presbyterian church. After coming west and as there was no Presbyterian church near she transferred her membership to the Methodist Episcopal church of which she was an earnest, faithful worker until her health failed.

She was a devoted mother. She leaves to mourn her death three sons and two daughters, Mrs. Margaret MULCAHY, of Des Moines; Mrs. Nell COVERDELL, of Creston; Fred, of Beaconsfield; Coyle, of Casper, Wyo., and Thomas, of Beaconsfield, with whom she has made her home since the death of her husband; also eleven grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.

Especially during her last few years she found great strength in communion with her Master. Her faith in Him was unfaltering.

To her friends she leaves behind a memory of true christian friendship; to her children she leaves behind a memory of noble God fearing motherhood.

"Rest, sweet one, rest; thy sufferings all are o'er,
Sickness and sin will grieve thy heart no more;
For, in the city of eternal day,
The tears from every eye are wiped away.
Ours is no common loss; to sweetness rare
Was added charity - so broad and fair
Its ample folds she cast o'er all she knew,
And thus herself in grace and beauty grew.
But, oh! our hearts so closely to her clung,
And now are with such tender anguish wrung,
To say that last, cold, bitter word - farewell!
Although we know "He doeth all things well!"

NOTE: James Oliver MILLER, husband of Emily "Josephine" SPANGLER",was born in 1850, and died in 1913. James and Josephine were interred at Oliver Cemetery near Ellston, Ringgold County, Iowa.
