OBITUARY - CLARENCE ERNEST MERCER

Clarence Ernest MERCER, son of Perry Franklin and Mary MARTIN MERCER, was born on a farm near Maloy, Iowa, on June 10, 1902, and passed away at the Mount Ayr Health Care Center on Feb. 5, 1981, at the age of 78 years, seven months and 26 days.

He was married Sept. 22, 1937 to Lela JOHNSON of Gentry, Mo. To this union were born five children; sons -- Darrell, Ernest and Donald, and daughters, Donna and Dola.

In 1904, Perry Franklin MERCER moved his family to Gentry County, Mo. where Clarence attended school and later began his career in farming and continued until March, 1955. At this time Clarence moved his family to a farm near Diagonal, Iowa. In October of 1956, the family moved to Kellerton, Iowa. It was here that he continued working as a farm hand until his retirement.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lela in December of 1976. He was also preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, five sisters, three sisters-in-law, four brothers-in-law, a daughter-in-law, Mary Ann, and some nephews and nieces.

Left to cherish his memory are his children, Darrel and Lucille of Shell Knob, Mo.; Ernest and Judy of Kellerton; Donald and Janet of Mount Ayr; Donna and Glenn PAYTON of Lamoni; Dola and Raymond DOSER of Kellerton; 15 grandchildren; six step-grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Bill MERCER, and wife, Myrtle of Stanberry, Mo.; brothers-in-law, Gaylen PITTENBARGER of Kansas City, Mo., Avery JOHNSON and wife Zella of Gentry, Mo., Eldon JOHNSON and wife Stella of Deep River; sisters-in-law, Edith MERCER of Albany, Mo., Alma MESSNER of Shawnee Mission, Kan.; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

Rev. Walter ZARR conducted funeral services from Rhoades-Wilson Funeral Home in Mount Ayr Saunday, Feb. 8, 1981, at 2 p.m. Burial was in Maple Row Cemetery at Kellerton.

Music was by organist Mrs. Weldon MEADOWS and vocalists, Mr. and Mrs. Richard JACKSON. Casketbearers were Rich MERCER, Mike MERCER, Terry MERCER, Bryan PAYTON, Rodney DOSER and Robert MERCER.
